everyone is supposed to wear them in all the school days. However, anyone is allowed to wear
regular clothing to school if they have a birthday. The bus alights in school and everyone is
looking and commenting on my shoes. Jim tells me that those are the best shoes he has seen in
school over the entire year. I am filled with a certain type of happiness especially when I walk to
the front to receive my award. The class teacher jokes by saying I should be awarded for the
most smartly dressed students too.
I am 17 years old and I am sitting for the day’s final lesson waiting for the bell to ring.
The day is a routine practice session for my basketball team. After the bell rings I head to my
locker and dress up for the practice. Among my games attire is a pair of blue Nike shoes which I
wear to all my game practice sessions. These shoes are a gift that my brother got for my birthday
the previous year. The shoes are neat as I wash them thrice each week. These are my best
sneakers and everyone in the team asks me where I bought them from. The shoes have enabled
me to perform well in many tournaments and I always associate them with success. As I walk
towards the court I notice that one of the binding fibers at the side of the shoe appear stained. It
is devastating and I cannot believe it. I have not been with the shoes for even eight months. After
the training I head home and Jeff, my brother suddenly notices the sadness in my face. He tells
me that he know someone who owns a sneaker restoration business and he agrees to take me
there to see if I could restore my shoes. After a few hours we head out to the shop and wait for
the guy to come through. I am shocked to realize that Jim, my best friend from 10 years ago IS
actually the owner of the business. He is in surprise just as I am. Soon he is making my shoes as
we catch up on the old times.
I am 19 years old and it is a chilly evening filled with cold and groups of people at the
restaurant. I am sitting at the drive-in restaurant with my best buddy Mike waiting for his friends
