Non-fiction Essay (Shoes)
I am 7 years old and today is about to be one of the happiest days of my life. Normally I
wake up for school at 7 am but today I am up quite early. I am happy since I have been enlisted
as one of the students to receive an award during the annual prize giving ceremony at our school.
There is a wide smile on my face and I cannot wait to head to school. My mum comes into my
room and tells me to check inside the box lying on my study desk. Surprisingly, I had not seen
the box as I had gone to sleep the previous day. Inside the box there is a pair of brand new black
leather shoes. Beside the shoes is a note that states, “The best pair of shoes for the best son ever.”
My mum tells me that the shoes are a present for my school performance and enlistment into the
list of the awardees. I cannot wait to head to school and show my best friend Jim the shoes. Our
school uniform includes black leather shoes and everyone is supposed to wear them on all the
school days. However, anyone is allowed to wear regular clothing to school if they have a
birthday. The bus alights in school and everyone is looking and commenting on my shoes. Jim
tells me that those are the best shoes he has seen in school over the course of the entire year! I
am filled with a certain type of happiness especially when I walk to the front to receive my
award. The class teacher jokes by saying I should be awarded for the most smartly dressed
student, too.
I am 17 years old and I am sitting for the day’s final lesson waiting for the bell to ring.
The day is a routine practice session for my basketball team. After the bell rings I head to my
locker and dress up for the practice. Among my game attire is a pair of blue Nike shoes which I
wear to all my game practice sessions. These shoes are a gift that my brother got for my birthday
the previous year. The shoes are neat as I wash them thrice each week. These are my best
sneakers and everyone on the team asks me where I bought them. The shoes have enabled me to
perform well in many tournaments and I always associate them with success. As I walk towards
the court I notice that one of the binding fibers at the side of the shoes appears stained. It is
devastating and I cannot believe it. I have not been with the shoes for even eight months. After
the training I head home and Jeff, my brother suddenly notices the sadness in my face. He tells
me that he knows someone who owns a sneaker restoration business and he agrees to take me
there to see if I can restore my shoes. After a few hours we head out to the shop and wait for the
guy to come through. I am shocked to realize that Jim, my best friend from ten years ago is
actually the owner of the business. He is as surprised as I am. Soon he is repairing my shoes as
we catch up on the old times.
I am 19 years old and it is a chilly evening filled with cold and groups of people at the
restaurant. I am sitting at the drive-in restaurant along the busy Mount Pleasant streets with my
best buddy Mike waiting for his friends to come over so that we can eat, chill and head out for a
basketball game at the town’s arena. Mikes friends are arriving and each one of us orders food. I
order a burger and a large glass of cold mango juice while the others order pizza and soda. While
I eat, one of the girls comes to my table and requests if is okay she sits beside me. She is wearing
a maroon tank top, navy blue rugged jeans and white shoes as well. It is coincidental that our
outfits are matching. She points at my white loafers and tells me that my outfit really matches
with the white shoes. She asks me if I live by North Fourth Street and I am remembering where I
have met her since she is very familiar. We stay up all night at the arena drinking and enjoying
watching the game. The night is going really well and everyone is having fun. I am loving every
bit of the time and I am thinking of asking the girl out. I want to be able to ask her out some
other time. She agrees and we decide on the location for the date. As the day comes to an end, I
escort her over to her home. She hugs me and reminds me not to be late for the next meeting. I
am heading home filled with joy and I cannot wait to tell my brother of what has happened. All
this time I keep thinking about the girl and our matching shoes. I am filled with satisfaction and
happiness as the day had ended well, better than I had expected.
