Contribution to modern nursing practice
She is known as the pioneer of modern nursing due to her stands on the importance of
clean environments in the nursing practice. Nightingale and the accompanying nurses changed
the sanitary conditions in the military hospital and this contributed to the decrease in the death

environments in hospitals are still used today. She also contributed to the improvement of
hospitals and established the modern design (Winkelstein, 2009). The changes recommended
included increased ventilation, addition of windows, improved drainage, and increased space.
She was also an advocate for her patients. She took care of the patients not just the sickness, by
establishing the patient’s needs and comfort standards that is known as person centered care
today. This were among the changes she established that influenced the compassionate care for
patients in modern nursing practice.
Philosophy on professional nursing practice
Contrary to the perception of nursing during Nightingale’s time the nursing profession
has improved to a very respectable profession (The Impact of Florence Nightingale on Nursing,

professionals with my father being a doctor and my mother a nurse. Their commitment and
professionalism motivated my love and interest in the medical field. Professionalism is one of
the most important philosophies in the modern nursing practice. This is mainly stipulated in the
person centered care that is an approach used by most nurses in the profession today.
Professionalism is not only in the care of society members, but also by advocating for safe
environments and participation in research that help in shaping health policies. Sanitation,
