Introduction
Several movies present various ideas in various fields. While using different plots, they
both display several themes using an enumeration of facts and fictions with an overall thinking
of communicating lessons to the target audience. This essay discusses the plot of the movie
called "Nutty Professor" with a view to reviewing the facts, theory accuracy and lessons that can
be learned from the film.
The movie posits that hamsters were overrunning the campus in Wellman College after
being released by Sherman Klump. Klump was a massively obese professor. However, he had a
good character as he was kind-hearted. Klump gave a lecture in the school. After the talk, he fell
for the Carla Purty who is his fan and a graduate in the field of Chemistry. The main character
then proceeds for dinner with his family. After that, Sherman asks Carla out for a date, and she
obliges. Carla enjoys the date and explains to Sherman how she loves his works. However,
Reggie who was a guest comedian with the club starts to mock Sherman about his obesity. This
evidently causes depression on Sherman who is involved in a nightmare that saw him wrecking
the city with a single fart. After conducting a test on his serum, Sherman realizes that he loses
300 pounds of weight in a matter of seconds. He is then overjoyed and awards himself with a
sports car with the money from the faculty account (Shadyac et al., 1996).
As a result of his knowledge of science, he suggests how to find a solution to ensure the
loss of his weight. This is through reconstructing the DNA of persons that are obese to enable
them to realize a substantial loss of weight. He puts in place more measures that ensure that he
loses two hundred and fifty pounds in weight. This weight loss is viewed positively, but it comes
along with a negative effect. The negative effect is the creation of another personality. Sherman
transforms into another person called Buddy Love. Sherman adopted this false name and once
again invited Carla for a date in the same club. At the club, he revenges on the comedian who
once again is present at the club by yelling him down. There is, therefore, a change in personality
from the normal kind person to the confident person. Moreover, he is more arrogant and of bad
behavior. Within a short of time, the bad behavior of Buddy Love gets out of control. However,
an unprecedented event takes place when Buddy Love is discovered and he flees from the scene
(Shadyac et al., 1996).
The Buddy Love that is the new person starts to brag about his achievement. He becomes
an assertive personality and a constant braggart. Additionally, Buddy Love becomes more
known amongst the people and the populace. In the following morning, there is a character
called Dean Richmond who meets up with a wealthy businessman named Hartley to discuss the
use of serum. Once more, Sherman arrives in the meeting as Buddy Love together with his
girlfriend, Carla. Buddy takes the place of Sherman at Ritz and takes credit for all the Sherman
works as a professor. Buddy’s character abruptly changes, and he starts associating himself with
three women which leads to his beak up with Carla (Shadyac et al., 1996).
At the ball, Sherman engages in a fistfight with Jason who wanted to drink more
substantial portion of the serum. He believes that it will lead to the death of Sherman and Buddy.
There is a scene where Sherman fights Buddy. This fight goes on for some time after which
Sherman transforms into his self. After the transformation, Sherman confesses and makes known
his misdeeds to the audience. The audience is left in utter shock. In his confession, Sherman
NUTTY PROFESSOR3
states that Buddy is what he wanted and thought he could be. This is because buddy was likable
to the people as opposed to Sherman. Carla realizes that Sherman lied and after an explanation
from Sherman as to why he cheated, the two engage in a jig. Later, Sherman is rehired to the
business due to his resilience and brilliance in research. Further, he gets the donations for his use.
Relation to Science
The movie explains a problem that many people go through. This is the problem of being
faced with two personalities of the same being. In science, this issue is called the multiple
personality disorder amongst humans. The video shows that the dysfunction can be corrected by
scientific means. However, it goes further to explain that one of the solutions to the problem is
by self-acceptance. This includes embracing any situation that any person faces. Also, the movie
elucidates the erectile dysfunction, this time in the more vigorous end. The serum tests conducted
on Sherman shows the result of an increase in testosterone levels in Buddy Love. It also explains
his urge to engage in sex with more than one woman thus engaging three women in a one-night
sexual activity(Shadyac et al., 1996).
Scientific Facts and Accuracy
The explanation of the biological process is accurate in the movie. For instance, the
explanation that the rise in testosterone levels leads to increase in sexual activities is biologically
correct. The association with three women at the expense of Carla by Buddy Love is, therefore, a
result of a chronological biological process (Shadyac et al., 1996).
Science fiction
The movie utilizes the use of the invention in most scenes. These are happening that have
no basis in the proofs on the ordinary factual happenings. Fist, the test by Sherman of Serum on
himself which then makes him lose three hundred pounds in a matter of minutes is wholly based
on fiction. This is because, in the normal situations, a weight loss is a scientific process involving
a lot of metabolic processes that have to take time. Taking the only matter of seconds and not
minutes or days or even years for a loss of three hundred pounds cannot be based on facts.
Also, the movie presents a scene where there is an abrupt change of personality from
Sherman to Buddy Love. The movie presents a situation where there is an abrupt transformation
after the taking of serum test. This is later followed by a scene at the club when the Buddy Love
flees away from a club. Klump's assistant, Jason, witnesses Buddy fleeing and it is at this time
that he is seen as the person who had earlier visited the club and left a credit card at the club.
The happening at the lecture where Sherman was explaining the use of serum to the
audience is also fictitious. Buddy was demonstrating to the crowd how to use the serum before
Jason got in. Jason thinks that by drinking a large portion of serum, he shall get rid of Sherman.
This fiction shows that the life of Sherman pegged on the serum is not factual. This is because in
the ordinary circumstances, the life of a man is supreme and the things of the earth do not
determine the lifestyle of a human being or at least its existence.
Again, the culmination of the movie into a fight between the two personalities is
fictitious. At the end of the day, Sherman wins over Buddy and confesses. This representation is
NUTTY PROFESSOR4
not expected in an ordinary life. If there be a fight between the parties, it can only be an internal
struggle but not the physical battle as presented in the movie(Shadyac et al., 1996).
Science concepts
The movie has made a lot of reference to particular ideas in science. First is the
reconstruction of Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) in the human beings to manipulate metabolic
and other processes. This is a natural formation of a human being and is amenable to
reconstruction by actions of man though to a limited extent. This is what the Sherman Klump
uses to settle the problem of obesity that was subjecting him to mockery. Through this
reconstruction, Sherman loses a lot of pounds in a matter of seconds (Shadyac et al., 1996).
The movie also uses the serum tests. Sherman uses the trials himself. And as result of the
tests, Sherman can lose three hundred pounds of weight within few seconds. As a result of the
tests, the testosterone levels of Sherman increases thus leading to the change in the personality.
Ultimately, the sex activities of Buddy Love heighten leading to association with the three
women in place of Carla (Shadyac et al., 1996).
Teachings from the movie
The movie has a lot of lessons that can be learned by the audience. One is that whenever
there is a change in someone's life, the difference should not be approached with so much
aggressiveness. It is true that the personality of Sherman had changed to Buddy Love but maybe
this change was for the better. However, his reactions after the change altered the effect and led
to his fall. His associations with the three women show how he approached his change of
personality with a lot of aggression, which did not go well with him after all. The reason it did
not pay is that it led to his fallout with Carla and the problem of having to flee from the bar
because of the difference in identity.
The movie also helps in explaining and understanding the role of science in the life of
human beings. Though the presentation is riddled with the mixture of fact and fictions, the clear
thing is that it has been recognized that such application of serum on the body can have effects
on the body of individuals.
The culmination of the movie helps in understanding the need to accept oneself. The
video explains the need for self-acceptance in the boosting of one's self-esteem. It is evident that
Sherman allowed his self-worth to be defined by the comedian and others in the society. This
made him engage in a rather deadly and a risky procedure of a personality shift from who he was
to who he thought he could be, which did not end up working for him. Also, it is understood
from the movie that even though individual mistakes have been made, time is not lost for self-
acceptance as a way of making things work in the current society. People can still confess their
errors and get an opportunity to right their wrongs. This is evident from the lifeline that was
given to Sherman after admitting before the large crowd at the ballroom of his misdeeds.
Lastly, it can be learned that matters and things should not be taken on the face value.
This is because even the best friends around maybe feigning in their activities and behaviors.
Carla would never have believed that Sherman was continually changing into Buddy Love. Same
NUTTY PROFESSOR5
applies to the relationship between Jason and Sherman Klump. Even though Jason was the
personal assistant of Sherman, he could not unravel the mystery behind the change of personality
from Sherman to Buddy Love. Better still, Sherman did not bother to explain to Jason (Shadyac
et al., 1996).
Public View
The movie has received favorable reviews from viewers. This is because it resonates well
with the many people who struggle to reinvent themselves. The film also champions for the
rediscovery of oneself. The many people who are victims of racisms, tribalism and self-rejection
identify well with the movie. As a result of this, the public views the film as an inspiration and
leads to change in attitude towards success.
Also contributing to the positive view of the public is the humor with which the facts and
fiction are presented in the whole movie. The director of the movie also presents the plot in a
good-hearted and sweet manner. The audience, therefore, feels compelled to watch the movie
over and over again in the theatres.
Conclusion
The movie of Nutty Professor presents the critical life lesson using the ridiculous and
sweet plot. The plot is filled with the tactically balanced facts and fiction which does not
compromise the role of communicating experiences to the target audience. The scientific ideas
projected also may be accurate though not entirely. But this again does not seem to prejudice the
communication of the lessons of self-acceptance.
