I. Problems
The problems at Sundale Club can be categorized into two parts; Macro and Micro.
Macro problems represent those problems that are significant while the micro problems are those
that are trivial in the athletic social club.
a. Macro
One of the macro problems in this situation is the reluctance of Haven to approach Ellis
about the issue affecting the employees. Johnson who is a homosexual, sexually approaches
other employees. The employees are disturbed by Johnson’s advances on them. Their plea
towards Haven is however not forwarded to Ellis who is in charge. Haven should have faced his
fear and approached Ellis about the situation.
The second macro-problem at the social club is Ellis dismissing the complaints brought
to him by Haven. Haven who is his junior knows how the system works and how the club his
run. Ellis who is the senior employee that could handle such a matter defends Johnson. The
problem worsens as a result of Ellis incompetence.
The last micro-problem is Watts’s approach to the issue. Watts is the director and senior
most employee of the club. Due to the nature of his situation, where he is about to retire, he
shuns the plea brought about by Haven. The end results are disgruntled employees and an
escalation of the problem which should not have been the case.
b. Micro
One of the micro-problems in this situation is Ellis’s friendship with Johnson. Their
friendship is affecting how the social club is run. It has no boundaries and this can be seen when
Ellis defends Johnson instead of looking into the matter to ascertain the truth. Their friendship
should not affect the way Ellis runs the club.

Ellis further appoints Johnson to fill the vacant position left by haven. Franklin should
have occupied the position because of the length of his stay in the club and his hard work as put
by the other employees.
II. Causes
The cause of these problems arises from Johnson never-ending sexual approach of other
male employees. He should have understood that not all employees are homosexuals. The
neglect by Ellis to confront Johnson about his antics is also a cause for secondary problems.
Additionally, Watts silence also led to further problems. If he could have intervened earlier, the
situation would have been solved. McLean (2006) argues that analysis and a good diagnosis of
the system are needed to determine the traditions and culture of the organization so that a
solution can be found regarding a certain problem.
III. Systems affected
The ranking of employees is one of the systems that has been affected. The club seems to
follow the traditional appraisal system were promotion is based on the productiveness of an
employee and the length in which one has stayed in a particular organization or institution. The
appointment of Johnson to be an assistant to Ellis has compromised this system.
The relationship between the top management and the other employees has also been
affected. The employees cannot trust Ellis anymore because of his late frolics in the social club.
Two employees have resigned because of this problem and club members are reducing at an
alarming rate.
IV. Alternatives
To avoid such a system from being affected in future, the managers or directors in the
workplace should not be given the power to promote other employees. A system should be

designed were six committee members will be tasked with the issue of promoting an employee.
Additionally, the committee can only be elected by other employees in the social club. This
system will be fair and democratic to the members.
V. Recommendations
• Ellis should be demoted because of his antics. His friendship has outweighed his purpose in
the social club. Conversely, the damage he has done is irreparable.
• Johnson should be fired, while Franklin and Haven should be brought to cover the two
positions. These two employees have the qualities and experience to guide the social club.
• The employees should be given the power to elect a committee to foresee future promotion of
employees. The power of the directors will only be needed to run the social club.
• A retreat should be called to repair the damage done by Ellis and Johnson.
• The social club should be redesigned and new features added to attract members and those
who had quit following the antics of Ellis.
