Many teens are becoming mothers before they can finish high school; by the age of 15,
about 30% of the boys and 20% of the girls have had sex in the U.S. by 1996 data showed that
more than 14 percent of American adolescent have access and are using birth controls. In many
cases, adolescent pregnancies are associated with school dropout, high illness rates and death of
both the parent and the child. Birth controls, can come in different forms. In any case, they
should all be administered with the advice and help of a doctor. It is also paramount to note that
no law currently in U.S requires that teems have parental consent when seeking these drugs. This
issue covers both moral and religious backgrounds, many feel that allowing this could make the
teens irresponsible. Lack of proper parent-children communication, prevention of
pregnancies and STDs are the main reason as to why teen should be allowed to seek birth
controls without parental consent.
First, there is lack of strong parent to child relationships. With the advent of technology,
the relationship between children and parent have deteriorated over time. Nowadays parents do
not spend much time listening and advising their children as they should be. There is lack of
necessary parent to child communication skills which makes it hard for the child to feel
comfortable seeking advice on sensitive matters as this tends to be "judgment-free" zone
(Parental Consent and Notice for Contraceptives Threatens Teen Health and Constitutional
Rights). In most cases, a parent will react and ask embarrassing questions. With parents not
being the choice for the advice, the teens end up being misguided which could be fatal.

Helps prevent disease and pregnancy. In 2011 more than 330,00 babies were born to
mothers below the age of 15 years. As much as anyone wouldn’t like to admit the truth is that
teens are sexually active and are at the risk of getting pregnant or contracting a disease. A single
act of sexual interaction could lead to pregnancy or STD contraction. In 2007 more than 24,000
people between the age of 13-24 were infected with HIV (Kennedy 22). Allowing the teens to
get birth controls without their parent’s consent would mean that just like adults they would be
able to use the right channels, seek the right advise from qualified physicians and eventually they
will be able to make the right decision.
On the other hand, some may argue that allowing teens to sex should be until marriage
and that birth control could expose teens to various side effects. The fact if the teens will be
denied the chance to seek birth control freely and without fear they will end up using the wrong
pills that could harm them.
In conclusion, I believe that the parents should be there for their teens to support and
educate them with the best birth controls that will help them avoid diseases and early
pregnancies. Also, the fact that parents do not have a lot of time to talk to their children about
this issue in addition to the sensitivity if this issue only leaves us with one solution, allow the
teens to get birth control without the parent’s consent.
