Parenting Styles
Parenting styles are approaches that parents use to rear their children. Parenting affects
children behaviors. The essay will categorize the parenting style I experienced during my own
childhood by giving specific examples of my parents’ actions. Furthermore, it will explain the
effect of such parenting style on my behavior by linking my parents’ behaviors to my personal
characteristics.
My parents followed authoritarian parenting style throughout my childhood life.
Authoritarian parenting is a non-responsive form of parenting and demands high standard of
behavior from the children (O'Reilly and Candida 1934). Parent rarely talks to their children
about issues relating to their behavior and, most importantly, their feelings. The approach hurts
the relationship between them since parents do not explain the reasoning behind rules. For
example, when a child asks, “Why should I work on home duties instead of the school
assignment? “, the response is, “Because I said so.” Thus, parents expect conformity to the rules
without questioning (O'Reilly and Candida 1936).
Parents were restrictive of my behaviors and punished me whenever I failed to adhere to
their strict commands. Punishment would range from caning to corporal punishment. For
example, they would issue threats, “Don’t dare coming home if you have not finished the job.”
For that case, they would not listen to any explanation about why I failed to complete the job.
They would often say, “You are too young to question my authority.” I always feared the

unknown consequences whenever I failed to perform my duties. They placed value on absolute
obedience to authority and criticized me every time I used my approach in performing tasks. I
followed parents’ instruction blindly without knowing the reasoning behind some commands.
Unfortunately, my parents were not responsive to my development. They controlled my
behaviors acting like bosses and giving no room to negotiate contentious issues.
Nevertheless, authoritarian parenting style has had a positive impact on my adult life. It
taught me how to behave like an adult while still young and thoroughly prepared me for negative
responses such as anger and aggression. I am able to endure stress during everyday encounters
and have a high sense of responsibility to workplace tasks. However, parenting commands have
made me develop a behavior of waiting for instructions on every task even the easy ones. I feel
obligated to follow the existing approaches. The behavior has lowered my reasoning capacity
ultimately affecting my career life. Moreover, I often conform to the authority without
understanding the process. The behavior has lowered my skill development capacity in the
workplace.
Additionally, authoritarian parenting negatively affects my relationship with the junior
staff at the workplace. I easily become angry with juniors whenever I find that they are not
following the instructions. I expect them to adhere strictly to set rules without questioning the
authority. I do not give them a chance to give their opinion on how to handle particular
assignments. The authority has led to serious disagreement thereby negatively affecting
organizational performance because of pressuring junior staffs to deliver projects within required
time frame without fail and perfecting everything.
In conclusion, parenting styles impact both positively and negatively the children’s future
adult life. A positive approach to authoritarian style can lead to a high sense of responsibility in

the adult life like in my case. On the contrary, it leads to fear and lack of acceptance by the
parents resulting in the child’s authoritative treatment of the junior in the future. Therefore,
parenting rules should be perceived as guiding principles that govern children behavior but are
not means of controlling them.
