PART I LEVEL ASSIGNMENT: ANALYZE A PHOTOGRAPH

Part A

1. Describe just what you see in the photograph.

In the photograph, there is a black colored man and a white-skinned woman. The

black man is towards the left of the photograph while the white woman is on the right. The

two people are standing beside each other with the man having his feet spread apart and

seeming like he wants to jump while the woman has her feet interlocked making her appear

as if she is walking. The man is seemingly slobbering a basketball with his right hand while

gripping the woman’s waist with his left hand. The woman is dressed in turquoise-knee

length dress and a pair of brown sandals while the man is dressed in navy-blue shorts, sports

tank, and a pair of black and white sneakers. Additionally, the woman is apparently slanting

against the man’s left hand with a big smile and the man is seemingly yelling with authority.

Finally, the photograph has texts written in black, red, and white with some capitalized.

2. Describe the photograph using the following terms: angle, contrast, foreground,

middle ground, background, framing, cropping, and symmetry/asymmetry.

The two models (Lebron and Gisele) in the photograph are the main focus of the

picture and must, therefore, overshadow everything else. To achieve this, the photographer

took a front angle to take the picture. The picture had some racial significance and therefore

the contrast of the two models’ skin appearance and sizes is completely reverse to give the

correct impression. Additionally, the texts in the picture appear to be increasing in size as you

move from the right to the left and side. The color of the texts is also contrasted with that of

the background to make the text easy to read. In the background of the picture, the title of

the magazine, the two models appear on the middle ground, and the text appears on the

foreground. To avoid distracting the viewers from the focus of the picture, the photographer

has applied framing and cropping to the texts so that they only appear at the edges. The lack

of balancing in the size and color of the texts and the models, as you move from the right to

the left, is an indication of the existence of asymmetry.

3. What do you think is the message of your photograph?

The purpose of this photograph is to promote racial tolerance between the whites and

the blacks while advancing the notion of physical fitness and choosing the right outfit for

each individual’s body shape and size.

Part B

1. What is the purpose of the photograph itself?

The aim of this photograph is to advertise fashion. That is, it is an advertisement meant to

sensitize people on how to choose the right clothing of their body shapes and sizes and the

importance of exercise in keeping the body healthy and physically fit. Those who desire to

have a more physically fit body or become models, particularly curvy women, are most likely

the targeted audience.

2. What and/or who are pictured in the photograph?

The two celebrities appearing on the photograph are Lebron James (a black colored man)

and Gisele Bundchen (white skinned lady). Lebron is a basketball player while Gisele is a

professional fashion model. Lebron is dressed in a navy-blue sports tank, navy blue shorts,

and a pair of black and white sneakers while Gisele is dressed in a turquoise over the knee

dress and a pair of brown sandals.

3. What is the “mood” of the photograph? What do you see that makes you think

so?

The dominant mood in the picture is that of excitement and energy. This is because the

lady in the photograph is smiling radiantly showing excitement with the male celebrity

demonstrating power through his facial expression (wide open mouth). To me, their

appearance in the photograph is a perfect display of energy, authority, and confidence.

4. Does the photo show an event or use a symbol you recognize?

The photo has suitably displayed the symbol of strength and brilliance although it lacks

any precise event that can be easily identified. The symbol of strength is depicted by

portraying the male model, who is a basketball player and big in size as if he is roaring (facial

expressions). The symbol of brilliance is represented by the female celebrity who is a

professional fashion model and therefore an image of beauty and brilliance. Her bright smile

acts as a symbol of brilliance and beauty to many people reading the magazine.

5. How does the composition help tell the story of the photograph?

The photograph is taken on a front angle with the focus being the two celebrities. The

models appear larger and occupy large space in the photograph to draw the attention of the

intended audience to their facial expressions and dress code. Their facial expressions give a

clear indication of the mood that the photographer wanted the viewers to decipher and what

the magazine wanted to communicate. The topic of discussion in the magazine is further

supported by the use of different colors, contrast, font size and shape, and lighting employed

in the cover photograph, therefore, making it to not only stand out but also attractive.

6. Does this image show about the issues, values, beliefs and everyday life of its

present-day culture?

Yes, it does. The picture has provided a precise depiction of what the modern society

perceives to be beautiful, strong and attractive. For example, in modern society, skinny

women with a light-skinned complexion are considered to more beautiful and attractive than

those who are not. The woman in the picture is light skinned and skinny, depicting what

modern society consider the standard of beauty for women. Similarly, the modern society

considers tall and muscular men to be stronger and more attractive than the rest. The man in

the photograph is tall and muscular representing what a standard attractive man should look

like. Using a fashion model and a basketball player in the photograph was also deliberate to

show the importance of staying physically fit. Finally, the choice of text font shape and size

also makes the understandability of the underlying message (exercises and healthy living)

easier.

7. What would you change about the photograph? Why? What might be another

composition you would use to tell this story?

If I was given the chance to alter the photograph, I would change the dress code of the

female model to a more fitting one. This is because the theme of the issue was the perfect fit,

dressing for every shape. Making the dress more fitting to the model’s body will help

promote that theme. The new composition would be slim ladies should wear slim fit dresses

and the not slim ones should try to work out to reduce their fat contents.
