SWOT analysis refers to the study undertaken by an organization to facilitate its
identification of some of the strengths, weaknesses, external opportunities and threats crucial for
its development of strategic plan for improvement. The strategic plans are often essential for any
organization, and in the contemporary economy, the healthcare firms and managers leading them
have started to view the necessity for premeditated planning to facilitate analysis and diagnosis
of problems. Despite its being a service firm, there is the necessity for the healthcare managers
ensuring its running as rather a business to facilitate effective planning. There is the need for
noting that the healthcare industry is highly volatile evident in its constant evolution with some
of the factors such as political, economic and technology (Buchbinder & Shanks, 2011).
Consequently, the healthcare managers need to ensure adequate preparation of their
organizations to adapt to some of the situations that they are unable to control as they continue to
execute their plans.

The strategic plan and execution of the strategies developed by the organization remain
strongly interrelated and further form crucial aspects of the dynamic strategic planning
processes. Development of the strategic plan often takes many years and is regularly updated.
The strategic plan often plays a crucial role in showing how the organization operates within the
market besides identification of some of the potential external opportunities or strengths and both
the internal weaknesses and strengths that the firm faces. The analysis of the Plano Medical
Center shows a significant change in the patient’s care mix adopted in the recent years. The
development of a situational SWOT analysis is thus important for reassessing the strategic
course of the firm’s mission.
The Plano Medical Center has numerous services that are comprehensive which
encompasses a center of excellence in neurology and pulmonary surgery, major trauma center
and the advanced cardiac services. Additionally, the medical center is famous for the hospice
services, maternity care, in-home nursing, acute care, residential and independent living. Such
points out to the strengths of the organization. However, the major weakness that the
organization has entails the fact that while the other agencies focused on moving to some of the
new market segments, the firm remained serving the older urban areas. The older urban area that
remains the primary market segment that the organization serves is presently trending to the
small businesses with the aging population being the main clients. Moreover, the clients are
increasingly taking up offers in other cities, and the change in the class of the customers presents
a significant challenge for the survival of the organization. The fact that the client's class is
increasingly changing with their need for new facilities is a cause for concern. There is thus the
necessity for revising the strategic mission of the firm from the previous years to find out

effective ways of getting the health facility back on track since the demographics have altered
significantly throughout the areas that they serve.
Some of the notable weaknesses include the fact that the organization lacks adequate
resources for facilitating full assessment of people at the neighborhood level. Moreover, there is
need long-term commitment resources so that the community partners are capable of knowing
that they can count on the organization for its efficient serving of the community members. The
organization as well lacks strong advocacy and policy positioning. The firm is losing its
reputation due to the lack of focus on facilitating continual growth and improvement of the
national presence and reputation as the leading organization in the delivery of quality services
that meet the needs of the community members.
There is the necessity for noting that the organization has many opportunities that if
exploited are capable of changing the status of the firm. The firm has the opportunity to
manipulate the community health and perception as professional education around some of the
crucial health problems that the large segment of the community faces. These key issues include
chronic diseases, obesity, and infectious diseases. The firm as well has the opportunity to
influence the state, local and national policies on some of the health and social issues (Detmer,
2009). These health and social problems include facilitating cardiovascular risk reduction which
includes obesity/nutrition reduction, smoking cessation and the establishment of initiatives aimed
at reducing exposure to smoke.
Some of the obstacles that the organization needs to overcome include the stiff
competition. The competition mainly arises from the different agencies in the industry. The
majority of the competitors are good at assuming positions on the issues pertaining to policies

and advocating their positions through public relations and government. The adverse economic
conditions as well affect the organization negatively through resulting in reduced funding for the
organization.
The financial resources of the organization include the insurance programs through which
the patients are capable of financing the healthcare services that they need. Moreover, the firm
provides subsidized care to its patients with whom the organization has a strong relationship with
through the provision of periodic payment options through subscriptions (The Strategic Planning
Process, n.d.).
The organization is capable of turning its threats into opportunities through investing in
innovation and research for advancing their technology towards meeting the market needs.
Moreover, the firm is capable of seeking for alternative sources of funding to ensure adequacy of
the funds in the organization to acquire the new technologies that meet the needs of its clients.
