Archetypal symbols are universal symbols which arouse an unconscious and deep
response or feeling in a person. They are symbols that embody the human experiences
irrespective of their living location. In the poem I had no time to hate, the archetypal symbol is
love. Love symbolizes and evokes the unconscious response of not hating.

Denotation refers to the literal or dictionary meaning of a word or phrase. In the poem
Success is counted sweetest, the word sweetest literally mean pleasant taste. However,
connotation refers to the social, emotional or cultural meaning of a word. It is the implied
meaning. The connotation meaning of sweetest in the poem refers to a happy life.

A simile refers to direct comparison with explicit words, for instance, ‘like’ or ‘as’. How
public like a frog is a simile in the poem I’m Nobody! Who are you? However, a metaphor does
not use words such as ‘like’ in the comparison. To be somebody is a metaphor.

Metonymy is a word used to substitute another word that are closely related. Synecdoche
is a speech figure in which a part represents the whole or the whole represents a part. Alliteration
involves similar letters occurring at the start of adjacent words. In the poem, “Who Occupies This
House?” Dickson uses the phrase, “where the Birds assemble” to connote a house inhabited by
humans. The word, “bird” is a substitute of “people.”
