Political power
James Madison definition of faction was a number of citizens whether a majority or
minority, who were brought together by common interests or impulse of passion towards the
rights of other citizens or interests of the community these factions are at odds with each other
they frequently work against the public interest. James Madison contribution was a vision that
well-constructed union would rise and control the violence of faction in various governments.
Madison argues in form of that the constitution fact that it establishes a government capable of
controlling factions.
Madison discussed at great lengths the matter of political factions and the oppression of
the minority opinion by the majority, both opponents and supporters are both concerned about
the political instability caused by the rival factions given the state of man factions are inevitable
as long as people have different opinions, different wealth and own different amount of property
they will continue to socialize with people who are most similar to them
There were two ways of eradicating the causes of factions or political parties the first was
to destroy the liberty essentials to their existence (Madison). The second one was to have
everyone having the same opinions, passions and interests this was impossible due to
indifference to ideas, passions, and interests. The greatest cause of faction had always been the

various unequal distribution of property, said Madison. Men of greater abilities and more talent
tend to have more property than those with fewer abilities since the first objective of the
government is to protect and encourage ability property owner must be protected, property is
divided unequally and there is a difference in property ownership and also people have different
needs according to the property they own for example, the interest of a landowners are different
from those of businesses (Madison).. The reasons for unequal distribution of properties were
different opinions concerning religion, speculations of practice, and the difference in leaders'
ambition, although these factions are often at odds with each other they also work against each
other against public interests, therefore, violating the right of others. Madison feels that the state
alone could not succeed in solving this problem of factions.
The answer lied in the structure of the whole government therefore any type of popular
government that could solve this problem effectively must then be presented Madison makes the
case that liberty and factions are all the same, instead of trying to figure a way of eliminating
factions Madison wishes to control only the effects of factions and control or remove faction
effects. The first one is impossible to remove factions together would mean the government
would have to afflict other people which the government should not do. There are two ways to
remove the causes of faction, destroy liberty or give every citizen the same opinions, interests,
and needs
Madison sees factions and liberty as essential to any government system, having a good
government system would allow citizens to express their opinions and concerns but what is not
healthy is the violence that faction brings, Madison argues that the effects of violent chaos can be
controlled by Republican model of government(Madison).. The inference that was brought up
was that causes of factions cannot be removed and that the solution was only to be sought in

controlling its effects, these effects could be better controlled in a large society under a
representative form of the government than in a small society under a popular form of
government
Madison suggested that a system of checks and balances would prevent other members
from oppressing the minority; a republic should be able to control the effects of factions even
more so than a democracy (Madison). Madison point is that each member should have little
dependence on the other member as possible. The republican government is made up of
representatives carrying interest and beliefs of the majority ones.
A new union would increase government revenues and facilitate their collection, the new
government structure would help reduce factions by making liberty possible to make
interdependence possible no one branch should have too much power on selecting members of
the other two branches, if this principle was strictly followed it would mean citizens would
choose their own president, the legislature, and the judges (Madison).. The member of the branch
should not be too dependent on the members of the other two branches.
The best way to avoid gradual concentration of power in any one branch is to provide
constitutional safeguards; the constitutional rights of all must check one man's personal interests
and passions (Madison). Dividing power helps check growth in any of the directions, in the
Republican legislative branch tends to have more power that's why framers divided the Congress
into two branches, the House of Representatives and the Senate
Different methods of election were introduced in each branch in a representative
democracy it is important to guard against the oppression of rulers it is equally important to
protect against the injustice which may be caused by citizens or a group. Majorities always

threaten the rights of the minority, there are two ways of avoiding evil and first is to construct a
powerful government. Madison believed that republic was better than democracy because
everyone benefited and everyone has equal rights, unlike democracy which could lead to
socialism and communism. A republic states anyone can own private property and has an equal
chance to grow and establish themselves, they could also have their own choice of healthcare, in
the republican form of government.
Madison added the legislative branch which is the strongest and therefore must be
divided into different branches and be as less connected to each other as possible and elect them
by different modes of election. They established a representative form of government in which
most elect few who govern pure direct democracies which citizens participate in making law and
rules.
