PREVENTION OF UTIs IN NURSING 2
The urinary tract infections are becoming a worry in the world. The author intends to put
across the threat that the catheter-associated urinary tract infections can cause to the society.
The bacterial infection has led to the death of some people and an increasing number of
people suffering from it. The infection is obtained when the disease-causing bacteria are
introduced to the urinary tract. The introduction of the bacteria to the urinary tract may be
during the placement of the catheter or after the emplacement. The perineal area has to be
cleaned before the insertion of the tip of the catheter. One is prone to get the bacterial
infection if not cleaned. The CAUTIs are affecting many people regarding morbidity,
economically; from the piling hospital bills due to the extended hospital stay and mortality.
Hospitals have made efforts to reduce the cases of the infection. Therefore, the hospitals
should provide the needed facilities, documentation for systems and training; this is all about
educating the staff. The hospitals are held responsible for any irresponsible actions.
Surveillance cameras can be used to help management in observing the nurses performing
their duties. The administration of the healthcare centers has to fasten the implementation of
the protocols guiding the insertion and removal of the catheters. The use of catheters should
be reduced; they should only be used when necessary (McNeill, 2017). The hospital is held
responsible for any irresponsible actions by the staff. Therefore, surveillance cameras may be
used in observing the team attending to their duties.
The nurses have an essential role to play in the prevention of CAUTIs. They are supposed to
remove the catheter from the patients as soon as possible because it lowers the risk of the
bacteria occurrence (McNeill, 2017). There should be guidelines that the nurses have to
follow for the insertion and removal of the catheters. There are nurse-driven catheters
removing protocol which make the work easy for the nurses. There are cases where the
attending nurses do not have an idea of the duration of placement; they should consider
assisting the patients to the bathroom regularly. The records of the patients have to be
