PRIVACY, CENSORSHIP & COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT 2
Privacy, Censorship and Collection Development
Introduction
Ideally, collection development involves the process of identification, selection,
acquisition as well evaluation of library resources for a group of users. While it is the purpose of
collection development to meet the needs and wants of its users, this is not entirely achieved due
to constraints such as censorship. Censorship which can be alluded to as the suppression,
restriction or prohibition of library materials that are considered obscene or even morally
unacceptable, has been a controversial topic for libraries for over a long time as it remains a hot
topic even in the present times. This paper extensively focuses on the challenges that censorship
displays on library collection development as well service delivery. Librarians through their
professional association have effortlessly being committed to the social justice of intellectual
freedom, however; censorship has continually threatened this principle of intellectual freedom.
This paper also raises concerns about how current librarians can ethically, effectively and
consciously censor library collection development without violating the principle of intellectual
freedom. The choice of the essential resources depends on scholarly peer-reviewed journal
articles. The consideration criteria for articles are the time it was published, the origin of writers
and their retrieval point. These resources will give unique commitments and discussions
regarding the matter of privacy, censorship and collection development when it comes to
intellectual freedom.
