Factors Contributing to the Growth of the Private Security Industry

The private security industry has witnessed rapid growth within the last decade and the

growth is expected to continue past 2020 which has made it the fasted growing employment

sector among all industries. The rapid growth of the industry is largely attributed to the shift

from curative to preventive measures of curbing criminal activity (Sibanyoni, 2014). For

instance, private investigators are employed to carry out background checks on potential

employees to allow for detection of any crime related connections before hiring. Companies that

commonly use this measure to prevent employee crimes are those that deal with proprietary

information or data security issues. Another issue contributing to the growth is the replacement

of some police roles with private security professionals particularly in residential areas and event

security (Sibanyoni, 2014). Such a phenomenon has coincided with many cities cutting back on

the security personnel manning various sectors or events in areas of their jurisdiction.

The industry is expected to record consistent levels of growth over the next ten years

attributing it to the growth of the middle and upper class across societies. Furthermore, the rapid

growth is likely to go hand in hand with the constant evolution the industry is going through

from night guards at the gate to include more roles especially investigative ones (George and

Kimber, 2014). Crime is also evolving especially due to the advent of internet hacking. The shift

of crime to the internet is already providing more opportunities for the security industry a trend

which is likely to continue due to the increase in online threats specifically hacking. It is also

justifiable to argue that the private security industry has an advantage of specialization and

efficiency when compared to the police now that crimes are also becoming sophisticated (George

and Kimber, 2014).

California Private Patrol

California Private Patrol is a successful private security company based at the San

Francisco Bay in the United States. From clientele reviews, the success of the company can be

attributed to four main secrets namely employing a mixture of well experienced and well-trained

personnel, real police officers and academic graduates. Furthermore, the company boasts of

high-quality customer service, partly flexible budget and offering a wide range of services (Bay

Area Security Companies, 2018). With a mixture of different personnel, the company is able to

tailor security services to the customers need and therefore facilitate achievement of high

customer satisfaction. The experience and training the personnel have gained in the previous jobs

enables the company to offer high-quality security services and customer services as they are all

stationed in their areas of specialization (Bay Area Security Companies, 2018). Focusing on the

budget, the company adjusts security services according to the budget of the client which not

only explains why the clientele base of the company comprise of different social classes and the

ever-expanding clientele base.

Starting a private security firm calls for a deeper analysis of the industry trends and

customer tastes and preferences particularly with the aid of a market research. However, the most

crucial mission statement of the company shall aim at providing tailor-made, unparalleled high-

quality security services both for individuals and the corporate sector. In this case, every

customer should be able to enjoy security services the way they want it without compromising

their security. The assertion is based on the fact that sometimes hiring private security company

requires one to adjust their normal lives which end, they end up frustrating the client. To achieve

this the core values of the company shall be confidentiality, innovativeness, teamwork

professionalism and integrity. Teamwork is a key component in offering private security as the

client must be involved in all matters concerning their security and all personnel cooperate to

achieve total security of the client.

Section III

G4S

G4S is the fourth largest security company in the world involved in any sector such as

cash transport for banks and private security for individuals and the corporate sector. After

reading the Financial Times magazine the most interesting aspects that can be essential when

establishing a security company include data collection, partnerships with the government and

specialization (Hill and Plimmer, 2013). Data collected from criminals and recorded before

handing them to the police is essential as a future reference when conducting background checks

for potential employees especially in data-sensitive industries such as the data security industry.

Formation of partnerships with the government is a strategy for rapid expansion as it gives the

company a national figure thus paving way for expansion to other markets. With the increasing

entry of players in the private security industry, competition is likely to become stiffer where

specialization and a large financial muscle are the tools for survival. Specialization allows for the

provision of high-quality services which gives the company an edge over its competitors.
