Psychological Problems and Low Self-esteem
The degree to which we respect ourselves, portray a feeling of confidence, and consider
ourselves as somewhat valuable is ultimately termed as self-esteem. As such, a continuum
platform about social isolation, self-doubt, self-criticism, and shame and anger which is slightly
suppressed is enumerated as being in association with low self-esteem. Psychology, on the other
hand, is related to the behavioral and mental characteristics of individuals, in which case it deals
with the science of behavior and mind. A feeling of inferiority is familiar to individuals who
have relatively have low self-esteem, in this particular case they tend to develop a notion that
every other individual in their distinctive setting, is in this remarkable level that is somewhat
superior. In respect to having this somewhat broken mindset, a void which limits this low self-
esteemed individual attain their desired state of, (full potential) self-actualization, according to
Maslow, is created. Psychological problems in the society, have been linked to the low self-
esteem as their primary cause.
As such, psychological problems affecting spiritual, mental, social, and peoples’ physical
potentials have all been linked to low self-esteem basing on the various researchers which have
enumerated this devastating dark side. Unfortunately, individuals in their early childhood and
teen life are considered the most affected. As such, an aspect of vulnerability is relayed
following the fact that this distinct group is within the age group, which is most certainly
considered, growing. In most cases, these young people deem themselves as inferior in a matter
of juxtaposition to other figures in the society. Hence, a thesis which points out the fact that low
self-esteem is considered as somewhat a primary cause of the psychological problems such as
Dissociative Disorders, Trauma, and Stressor-Related Disorders, etc., have been enumerated
extensively.
To begin with, poor mental health, one of the psychological problems experienced by
young teens has been enumerated as being caused by low self-esteem. (Marshall et al., 2015),
links low self-esteem to self-compassion from time to time. This aspect of self-compassion
occasionally identifies significantly with unhealthy evaluations, feelings of inferiority, and self-
doubt. In later stages of these young peoples’ lives, this psychological disorder may ultimately be
of negative impact especially if their self-compassion was at a relatively low phase and also if
they had been victims of very low self-esteem.
According to (Marshall et al., 2015), effects about low self-esteem can be lowered by
mature self-compassion, as such, significantly countering the consequences that come with the
little esteem and improving the mental health of this young people. It is also the belief of
(Marshall et al., 2015), that this low self-esteem may ultimately affect the productive years of
this adolescents to a great extent, as such, compromising their sociological interactions hence
hampering and altering the ability of the adolescents to realize their full potentials (self-
actualization) in accordance to the Maslow hierarchy of needs.
Secondly, low self-esteem has been highly linked to parenting issues, and the way
children are raised up by their families. In this particular context, (Rice & Williams, 2017)
acknowledge that children who suffer from low self-esteem are unable to remain competitive in
the high and ever-changing competitive world. Hence they are unable to achieve their full
potential occasionally.
Parenting as enumerated by (Rice & Williams, 2017) is a crucial contributing factor that
plays a huge role in the self-esteem of the child. Also, the different styles of parenting happen to
yield different levels of self-confidence in the child, and to some significant extent, play a critical
role on how well the child can be effective in the society. About the different parenting styles,
(Rice & Williams, 2017) identify the authoritative parenting and nurturing style as the
appropriate parenting technique in developing a positive self-esteem in the child who is neither
too high nor too low. This hence increases the ability of the child to participate in the society
efficiently and according to (Rice & Williams, 2017), also attain a level of competence which
gives them the chance to compete, at least reasonably, in the dynamic, robust and ever-changing
competitive world, hence they become capable of achieving their full potentials.
Thirdly, low self-esteem and depression have been placed under the spotlight as being of
partial relationship. Unfortunately, a disclaimer which comes with this obscure observation
according to (Sowislo & Orth, 2013) is that, however much low self-esteem and depression are
very closely related, the evidence supporting this thesis is not yet consistent and concrete.
According to (Sowislo & Orth, 2013), the two causes and effect scenarios can be viewed
according to two different models with one causing the other.
Also, low self-esteem contributes to depression in an individual when taking a look at
the vulnerability model according to (Sowislo & Orth, 2013). However, when the scar model is
used to analyze the situation, as enumerated by (Sowislo & Orth, 2013), depression can erode the
low self-esteem of an individual. (Sowislo & Orth, 2013) Enumerate that, measures of
depression, age, and gender have a relatively smaller scale of impact on the psychological
disorder. As enumerated by (Sowislo & Orth, 2013), an assentation that low self-esteem is linked
to depression and anxiety has been established significantly.
Also, as a way to solve or somewhat improve the low self-esteem in individuals, a link
about Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is established, and to some extent, substantial results
are attained. According to (Fennell, 2005), the fact that low self-esteem is the cause of anxiety
and depression in individuals, is utmost acknowledged. Some hypothesized elements that have
been supported and deemed to be effective in controlling the situation have been enumerated by
(Fennell, 2005). Early life experiences have a resultant effect on the low esteem and hence lead
to myriad psychological difficulties according to (Fennell, 2005).
Life events can be able to influence the self-esteem one has for themselves, as such, the
sense of self-worth is affected by the self-esteem that one has for themselves, and some events
tend to form a processing bias due to past events and experiences. According to (Fennell, 2005),
low self-esteem ultimately triggers a chain of processes in an individual’s mind that tend to
affect the psychological reasoning, thereof, may be treated through the CBT process as
enumerated by (Fennell, 2005).
Also, as a way of overcoming low self-esteem issues, the behavior of praising children
regarding when they need help is to be approached at a somewhat critical angle. The low self-
esteem can be linked to a myriad of psychological problems including an inferior feeling of self-
worth, self-doubt and other mental health problems. As such, (Brummelman & Bushman, 2016)
have enumerated how some parent or other grown-ups tend to support their little ones by
praising their efforts such as saying "well done" and "keep it up." The praises have been shown
to have a negative impact on children with very low self-esteem as they may tend to judge
themselves more bitterly in case they fail to meet the expectations at a later time.
According to (Brummelman & Bushman, 2016), the series of praises or compliments to
such people who suffer the psychological problem may create a self-sustaining downward spiral
that may serve to worsen the child's esteem hence creating a more detrimental effect for them. In
this context, the various forms of appraisal, however how insightful, needs to be approached at a
somewhat critical angle, as such, lessening the damage in the psychology of these young ones.
In conclusion, a significant link between low self-esteem and various psychological
disorders have been enumerated extensively in this context. Low self-esteem can be therefor be
linked to increased anxiety and depression which hamper the overall effectiveness of the
individual in the society according to the thesis of the paper. Various treatments for the
psychological disorder can, however, be used to treat or improve the disorder including better
parenting methods, positive compliments or cognitive behavior therapies. The condition can be
avoided or improved before the mental health of the individual gets completely broken.
