Measures against Malpractice in Psychology Career
Psychology primarily is a science that seeks to establish how people think and reasons for
their actions. The profession encompasses fields such as counseling, training, teaching, research
and giving expert advice in diverse places like in court. Hence, areas that psychology career
finds its applications are like the hospitals, research laboratories, clinics and colleges among
others. According to the occupation job outlook, the growth in psychology is estimated to be
14% by 2026, which indicates more chances for jobs ("Handbook," 2017). Another aspect of
psychology careers is how they gain their information. The primary means are through
interviews, observations, historical records on individuals and use of tests and rating scales.
Therefore, the primary potential danger in such a career is malpractice since it calls for high
confidentiality, integrity, and self-control. Statistics indicate that in a 20 years career there are
40% chances that psychologists receive a complaint through the licensing board (Niemeyer and
Taylor, 2014). This paper will discuss three logical solutions that can effectively lower the
chances of malpractice in one’s career as a psychologist.
The first possible solution is to practice self-care. Setting boundaries for personal life and
work is a challenge even to the most experienced psychologist. Several stressors coming from
friends, spouses, kids, illness and financial constraints can cause burnout as a result interfering
with their works and at times leading to poor judgment (Knapp et al., 2017). Therefore, it is vital
for the psychologists to understand their limits by practicing self-care. Hence, they should be
able to note the red flags that imply they are getting out of control such as experiencing stomach
upsets, lack of concentration, anxiety during sessions, and headaches. Ignoring such signs is
detrimental since it poses a danger of malpractice such as excessive self-disclosure to the

patients, leaking confidential materials by failing to secure a client’s files, and careless and
inappropriate charting with the clients, which are all ethical violations.
The second is to ensure that one is covered and protected against malpractice always.
This approach calls for one to understand the extent of the employer's coverage and identifying if
they are gaps that one needs to be filled by personal malpractice policies. Additionally, it is
essential to know if ones covered even in off-duty like when one is volunteering. Also, in the
case when a college files a complaint to the board against you. According to Niemeyer and
Taylor (2014), the psychologists should consider the benefits that come with the policyholder
such as consultation services, risk management and coverage and even caution against going for
cheaper covers as a means of cutting cost. Other cases that call for a higher coverage are when
dealing with clients with personality disorders, mental illness, or those who are suicidal since
they leave the psychologist at a vulnerable end for board complaints and claims of malpractice.
Therefore, taking a malpractice insurance policy is a logical solution to potential lawsuits, ethical
issues and violations that may not be in control of the psychologist.
Finally, the psychologist during practice should be connected and well informed on
current-status concerning laws and issues pertaining licensing board. This can easily be achieved
by being in professional groups or associations like the APA’s Practice Organization that
provides their members with up to date information on changes that influence their practices.
According to research, being in a group lowers the risk of being in violation since most are
because of ignorance, miss information or clinging to outdated information (Knapp et al., 2017).
Another way of staying connected is by asking licensing board questions pertaining record
keeping, confidentiality issues, and licensure requirements since they are experts on state laws.
Therefore, staying connected and informed will reduce the chances of malpractice since most are

due to ignorance, miss information or depending on out-dated materials, which may not be
useful, provided the unprecedented rate of change in the contemporary society.
In retrospect, nature and capacity that psychologist work is demanding and poses high
chances of facing malpractice charges. However, there are several logical solutions that they can
apply during their practice to protect themselves against such problems. The first is practicing
self-care that involves setting outright boundaries between the personal life and work and also
identifying the red flags that might suggest one is getting out of control. The other way is seeking
malpractice insurance policy that will cover them against lawsuits and charges that are out of
their control. Lastly, staying connected and informed on current information in the field to cope
up with profoundly changing laws and licensing issues. Therefore, integrating such protections in
one's psychology career will ensure safe practice and free from malpractice charges.
