Qualities of a Good Leader
Leadership forms part of any organization, and it determines the success and future of the
business. For this reason, a leader needs to have a particular set of skills. Besides, he or she is
required to execute appropriate tasks, set direction, build a solid vision and be creative and
innovative. One is expected to utilize his or her management skills to guide the followers in the
right direction and target in an efficient and satisfactory way. According to Roselinde Torres,
leadership is an art or skill that is acquired through experience and association with peers and
colleagues. As a leader, it is essential to focus more on looking ahead without forgetting to
anticipate change and evolution as well as think outside the box to ensure the success of the firm.
On the other hand, one needs to interact with people who look at things differently as it
will bring creative ideas. One should also have a good relationship with his or her juniors. There
are several attributes of a leader that affect his or her communication with peers, colleagues, and
juniors. According to Julian Treasure, a leader should learn the art of clear expression in order to
articulate ideas or persuade the audience. The most important aspects of good communication
include avoiding gossips, judging, negativity, excuses, exaggeration, and dogmatism. Therefore,
to foster communication one must practice honesty, authenticity, integrity, and love. However,
honesty should be based on ethical and precise consideration of the effects that any statement can
cause.

Notably, what makes a communication meaningful is how it is delivered rather than its
content. Treasure state that a leader should be able to speak with power and authority. He or she
should also be able to use smooth, vibrant, and warm voices when speaking. In addition, speech
tone should be varied through modulation and intonation; otherwise, it will be boring or difficult
to follow. Thus, effective communicate happens when the receiver understands it as it is
intended. Furthermore, one should understand concepts of power and its influences as it forms an
integral part of leadership. When one is given power over the others, there is the tendency to use
it wrongly. Therefore, it should be practiced in a manner that it does not demean others or should
not be founded on bias or malice. Instead, it is supposed to be used to improve an organization
and the lives of the followers by developing structures that help in mitigating the challenges and
at the same time improving current conditions.
In most cases, leadership is thought to be similar to management, but these two concepts
differ. Management is the control of the various aspects that affect business sustainability such as
quality, money, and time. Therefore, a manager's role is to analyse these elements and control
them based on how they relate to the market and the product. However, people are an important
part of business, and they are affected by decisions made by it. Thus, leadership deals with
people (Gächter et al., 955). Initiatives of a leader are what determine how people react to a
situation. By giving an example of a chain, the authors demonstrated the crucial role leaders’
play.
The chain gives a picture of people working together with a leader who does not have a
clear framework. The first example of pushing the chain showed that if the leader does not
develop a structure to lead, people will not understand which way to follow. The second example

of pulling the chain revealed that the proper skeleton gives people direction. Therefore, it is
imperative for a leader to head without ego, and getting people to follow is the greatest skill.
In general, leadership is based on the one's capabilities to lead by example and showing
people the direction to take. As a leader, power should be utilized without malice or bias so that
people could have confidence and trust. Anyone can be a leader, but it takes a lot to be an
effective one including associating with diverse groups, being open-minded, having proper and
effective communication skills, and understanding the limits and effects of power (Higgs, 89).
Leadership qualities are taught in schools; thus, most leaders have the theoretical understanding
of leadership. However, to be an effective leader one has to work with experience and skills such
as investing in ideas and people that are imperative in bringing change.
Overall, an effective leader is one who is passionate about a specific vision and has
values which he or she needs to uphold. In addition, he or she should also take into consideration
ideas from other people including his or her juniors and evaluate them accordingly. Apart from
one’s strong values and ideas, confidence and action are the stepping stone for bringing the
changes. The other imperative features of a leader include excellent planning abilities, solid
interpersonal skills, and an outstanding communication capability.
