Racism
Racism is the belief that one race is superior to the other, and this belief often results in
discriminations and prejudices towards the people based on their races and ethnicities
(Fredrickson, 2015). According to Fredrickson, racism develops when one ethnic group
dominates and excludes or seeks to eliminate the other ethnic group or race due to the differences
in their beliefs.
Racism is experienced in many countries of the world and has led to deaths of many
millions of people. The United States is one of those countries where racism has dominated and
has resulted in deaths of many people. The racism experienced in the United States mainly
involves the white Americans and the black Americans where the white Americans believe they
are superior to the black Americans. The racism in the United States started and spread during
the colonial era. Most of the legal and the social rights were given to the white Americans and
denied to the black Americans. The rights and privileges in matters concerning voting, high-
quality education, immigration, land acquisition, criminal procedures, and citizenship were given
to the white Americans while the black Americans were limited to some of those rights (Bonilla-
Silva, 2010). The major racial and ethnic-structured institutions included the Native American
reservations, the Native Americans boarding schools, the slavery segregations, and the
immigration internment camps. Racial discrimination was banned in the United States in the mid
of the 20
th
century and was termed as a morally repugnant which was socially unaccepted. The
ban helped to reduce the incidences of racism but did not end racism completely as we still have
several cases of racism in the United States. We have many cases of racial stratifications in

housing, employment, lending, education, and the government where the black Americans are
always discriminated due to their race.
The other countries which have been hit by racism in a great way include India, Nigeria,
South Africa, and most of the Middle East countries. These countries consist of people of
different races and ethnic groups. The differences in their ethnicities have resulted in serious
chaos between the ethnic groups most of which have resulted in random wars which end up
killing many people. The ethnic groups which carry the majority of the citizens feel superior to
the other ethnic groups and therefore feel they should control them and everything else in the
country. However, the ethnic groups of the minorities don’t agree with the majorities and end up
opposing their demands. They feel they should be equally represented in all the economic,
political, and social matters concerning the country. They demand to have representatives in all
the sectors of the countries to represent their interests. However, in most countries, their
demands have been declined, and this has resulted in serious wars between the ethnic groups,
and these wars have resulted in deaths of many citizens and have forced some citizens to flee to
different countries. The countries inhabited by the whites and the blacks have faced serious cases
of racism since the two races have different interests and the whites have always imagined
themselves being superior to the blacks. Therefore, they always feel they should be given some
special treatments. However, the blacks are always against these demands and feel all the people
should be treated equally regardless of their race.
Racism has many negative impacts on the individuals and the families which are
discriminated on the basis of their races. Among the most serious impacts are physiological and
psychological problems faced by the discriminated individuals and families (Roimata et al.,
RACISM
4
2012, pp.408-415). The physiological and the psychological problems have resulted from the
many challenges faced by these individuals and families in their lives as they encounter with the
other individuals and families who think of themselves as being superior. Among the major
challenges include discrimination in the education sector, discrimination in the employment
sector, discrimination in the health sector, discrimination in the political sector, and
discrimination in many other important sectors in the country. The discrimination has made these
individuals and families suffer psychologically, and some have ended up with mental illnesses,
and others have even ended up killing themselves as they try to run away from the
discrimination. Racism has also led to emergence of random wars between the ‘superior’ and the
‘inferior’ ethnic groups, and these wars have also led great losses and deaths especially to the
‘inferior’ ethnic groups.
Racism has many other negative impacts and should be avoided as much as possible to
have a peaceful coexistence between all the races and ethnic groups. Racism has attracted the
attention of many international bodies most of which have risen to fight racism in different
regions of the world. UNESCO and OHCHR are some of the bodies which have risen to fight
racism in different countries (Guy and Goodwin-Gill, 2010). It is our responsibility to stand
together to fight racism and live in harmony regardless of the differences in our races and
ethnicities to avoid experiencing the many negative consequences of racism.
