Battle royal is a short story by Ralph Ellison and its focus is on racial inequity and the
hardships faced by the black community in the society. It is about a black boy trying to survive
in a white society which also signifies the struggles of black people in the society for equality
(Greg). The story is based on a narrator’s memory which may be true or false because it is a
reflection of the experiences of suffering, pain and the humiliation he goes through to achieve his
dreams.
The story has strong philosophical development through the struggle in search for
personal identity by use of deceit and corruption.
The deeper meaning of Battle Royal is portrayed through the elements of plot, setting,
characterization, the point of view, tone, symbol and time. The tone of the story is frank and
thoughtful giving the story a reflective, crucial and definitive edge. Racial awareness is the main
drive of Invisible Man and the outcomes of inequality are seen through the abuse of dignity and
control of the minority by the superior (Greg). The elements of prejudice and ignorance are seen
throughout the movie as the white characters show and demand supremacy by virtue of their skin
color.
