Ralph Ellison on Get Out
The movie Get Out is a horror comedy intended to raise conversations on racial injustice
and sexual harassment. It is about the struggle and pursuit of civil rights of gender and race and
the desire to be regarded as equal human beings and can also be viewed as a documentary.
The film undergoes changes at the end because of its supposedly tragic ending with
Kaluuya’s character being arrested for the murder of his girlfriend (Johan). The original ending
was intended to invoke audiences into racial discussions and conversations but the general
opinion of the public towards the end led to its adjustment. This brings into question the original
intention of the movie and if, through these changes at the end, the intended message and
outcome was conveyed.
The movie has multiple short messages which cannot be noticed easily unless with its
repeated and critical analysis. The different twists to the movie are meant to familiarize the
audience with the key concepts being addressed.
There is a sense of humor and trickery in this movie with the entanglement of Kaluuya’s
character in a conspiracy at his girlfriend’s estate and through the comic cellphone conversations
of Milton.

The movie, therefore, creates awareness in the nature of relationships in the society
between the white and the black. It does not only portray what is experienced in the society
currently but also the extended and continued oppression of the blacks during the ancient periods
and the struggles undergone to achieve equality.
JORDAN PEELE ON BATTLE ROYAL
Battle royal is a short story by Ralph Ellison and its focus is on racial inequity and the
hardships faced by the black community in the society. It is about a black boy trying to survive
in a white society which also signifies the struggles of black people in the society for equality
(Greg). The story is based on a narrator’s memory which may be true or false because it is a
reflection of the experiences of suffering, pain and the humiliation he goes through to achieve his
dreams.
The story has strong philosophical development through the struggle in search for
personal identity by use of deceit and corruption.
The deeper meaning of Battle Royal is portrayed through the elements of plot, setting,
characterization, the point of view, tone, symbol and time. The tone of the story is frank and
thoughtful giving the story a reflective, crucial and definitive edge. Racial awareness is the main
drive of Invisible Man and the outcomes of inequality are seen through the abuse of dignity and
control of the minority by the superior (Greg). The elements of prejudice and ignorance are seen
throughout the movie as the white characters show and demand supremacy by virtue of their skin
color.
The historical struggles, experiences, and understanding of racism require the
acknowledgment of the differences in racial, sex, ethnic and religion and the attempt to reach out

for connections. The movie tries to set out the differences in classes in the society and how each
group is perceived through social worth. It, therefore, encourages a spirit of nationalism and
unity through seeing everyone as an equal and also portrays the division in society through racial
inequity.
