Question 1: what are the main points of the article?
The primary point addressed by the two articles is domestic violence against
marginalized women. In Sokoloff and Dupont (2005) articles, culture is grounded as the primary
cause of domestic violence against women. The primary cultural aspects that contribute to
domestic violence according to the authors are feminist practices such as racism, ethnocentrism,
heterosexism, and class privilege. In Messing et al. (2015), the article cites heterosexism,
institutionalized violence as well as racism as the primary causes of violence against
marginalized women.
Question 2: what is a quote that you think hits the main points?
“Providing culturally competent services without providing for changes in the underlying
and intersecting structural conditions of poverty, isolation, racism, sexism, and
homophobia will not provide battered women with the means to significantly change
their situation and that of their sisters."(Sokoloff and Dupont 2005)
From the quote, it is evident that services provided to domestic violence victims as well as the
policies set to protect women from domestic violence are not sufficiently effective. The arrest
and prosecution policies do not prevent the domestic violence culture from spreading but rather
subjects the victim to re-victimization from the perpetrator.
Question 3: what new questions does this article raise for you?
How can the culture of domestic violence against women be eliminated?
Are the steps taken by the state effective in fighting violence against women?
Are women the perpetrators of domestic violence?
Question 4: How, based on what you have already learned, might you offer a productive critique
to the author(s)?
READING REFLECTION 3
Although the authors have illustrated the cause and the effects of domestic violence
against women, they do not provide concrete solutions to the problem. Probably, they should
have developed a comprehensive approach that involves different stakeholders and covers all the
laws and policies regarding violence against marginalized women. The plan should also include
strategies that help in preventing violence rather than offering services to the victims. Social
mobilization should also be synchronized into the strategy to ensure that the social norms and
behaviors that promote violence against women are addressed.
