The economic inequalities that exist in the American society are as a result of own
creating. To a large extent it is agreeable that they shape the behavior of most people and that
they also have an effect on the political economic system. A typical American has certain
economic beliefs which they do not necessary act upon. This creates a divide within a single
person so that within them there exists a citizen and a consumer. As a citizen, every American
believes in an equal economic system. In view of this, preservation of neighborhoods with small
shops and bookstores is quite important for most people. It is also important to maintain steady
jobs and good wages for American retail workers and manufacturers. Such are important for
most people that believe in economic inequalities. Although such beliefs are far from actual
reality.
Our actions seem to contradict our beliefs so that the consumer part of us always wins
over the citizen. This is because, much as most of us would like to preserve small shops and
bookstores in our neighborhoods, we have a preference for shopping online. Another perspective
into it is that most of us always look out for the best deals when seeking products or services.
The main reasons as to why the consumer part of us wins over the citizen is that we have limited
resources and rarely do we associate our behavior, especially economic wise, with their end
results. For instance, when doing shopping online one does not think about how doing so
destabilizes small businesses in their neighborhoods. The other reason for this would be that
there is lack of collective action, so that an individual does not see the need to undergo the
inconvenience of not getting the best deal with an aim of discouraging competition among the
companies offering the services involved, whereas there is no assurance that any other person
would do so. Thus subconsciously, we act against our beliefs and thus economic inequalities in
our society.
