Reflection in Creative Writing Process
Creative writing is an art just like any other that requires nurturing and practice.
Attending classes under the supervision and motivation of my teachers has reenergized my
love for creativity. The mentorship received during the creative writing study undertakings
has motivated my increased appreciation to creative writing. However, I must admit that
creative writing requires technical skills too. The little practice and exposure experienced
during the classes have inspired me to consider creative writing a profession in the future.
Practice is very crucial as far as creativity is concerned. I have learned that a writer
must get out of the comfort zone and practice more frequently. One has to get a good grasp of
grammar dynamics and sentence structures. The practice can also involve going through other
people's literary works to learn new and better ways of writing. On this note, our teacher
emphasized frequent practice and recommended a list of books to sharpen our skills. Further,
I learned that creative writing requires a lot of personal reflection and analysis to achieve
excellence and value addition. Thus, practice and self-reflection are very crucial to achieve
success in creative writing.
I have learned that reading wide expands my imagination. According to recent
research in the UK, the results found out that 76% of the 1500 respondents agreed that
extensive reading improves creative writing capabilities (Gleed 2). Through the many pages

of creatively written pieces, I have gotten an opportunity to share widely with my peers in
different aspects of knowledge. I have realized that creative writing is also a critical pathway
towards self-discovery and tool. It is a tool because I can effectively use the skills to
communicate valuable information to the society. Hence, I realized creative writing could be
used to implement institutional policies and objectives in a better way.
Further, I have learned that peer review is crucial in the creative writing process. It is
apparent that one cannot be all-knowing in all the aspects. I have learned to allow peers to
check my creative writing piece to enable the evaluation of progress. The criticisms from
others allow one as a creative writer to grow towards becoming a better self. Through the
experience, I have envisioned a career in the future to support young upcoming creative
writers. This is because I learned a lot through discussions and sharing with other senior
creative writers and trainers in the field. Hence, peer review is critical towards personal
progress and development.
Djivik et al. argue that new information is good exposure (3). Creative writing has
exposed me to knowledge in different fields. My desire to gain insight has been inspired by
the fact that hard facts must support creativity. The diverse experiences achieved in the areas
of history, biology, literature, and social sciences have improved my creative writing
significantly. They have enabled me to realize that creative writing requires a great passion
towards reading. One must update him or herself with both current and past knowledge to
remain relevant. Creative writing requires a careful blend and smooth incorporation of
different pieces of information to ensure objectivity is achieved. Therefore, creative writing
requires extensive reading just like other careers.
Moreover, reception of creative writing by the intended audience is critical. I have
learned that the feelings and emotions influenced by the pieces of art to the audience matter to

a creative writer. I have become more creative in my writing since I can connect to my
environment and people in general ("From Citizen: 'You Are in the Dark, in the Car...? by
Claudia Rankine"). Through much practice and long hours, I have conquered my fears of
failure and desire to satisfy my audience. This has improved my self-esteem. The pursuit of
excellence is indispensable as a result of the different expectations of the audience.
Adam Gottlieb is my all time favorite artist, poet, writer, and performer. His talent
appeared natural until I learned of his journey through his poem, "Poet Breath Now"
(Rankine 1). He shares his struggle with his passion for writing which did not bear fruit for a
very long time. The poem was such a great inspiration; it gave a great hope of success in
creative writing. Adam has a big following today. His pieces are shared online on various
platforms commanding a considerable audience globally. He started from a humble beginning
and rose to deserve global headlines in literature. The story motivates and inspires my creative
writing greatly.
Freewriting was an invaluable exercise. At the onset of the training, it was hard to
understand the essence of the practice yet for every lesson attended the first fifteen minutes
were dedicated to the practice of freewriting. The exercise demanded a lot of creativity in
short durations from the learners. The creative writing exercise enabled me to think faster and
apply skills learned accurately. Part of the training involved classmates reading out their
creative pieces to the whole class to evaluate the quality and relevance. It was an excellent
opportunity to become a better writer, through the peer review platform and teacher
supervision. Hence, the freewriting exercise enables personal growth and development that
are very crucial for creative writers. This makes the task crucial in learning creative writing
process.
