‘Reflection on my essay writing’
Before engaging in the essay writing, I used to be terrified of writing. This was because I
wouldn’t understand how well the various components of a good essay can be combined in an
essay to enable the writer to effectively communicate his/her ideas. My major point of worry was
how I would keep the audience involved hence paying their attention to my piece of witting from
the introduction to the conclusion. To me writing was complicated than making a speech since a
speech involved direct audience who the speaker can gauge their feelings. I took writing as a
difficult task since it involved indirect audience and ensuring I meet the demands of such indirect
audience (who I was not physically seeing) brought more confusion. Though the case, the
semester’s writing activities have really transformed my writing, I have gained enough of the
confidence that would be required to make an effective written piece. Through the various
learning experiences such as individuals readings, peer reviews, authors feedback and many
others, I have been able to interact with diverse knowledge sources which have made me much
better by removing the confusion and the negative picture I had with regard to writing.
The first area of my improvement is on the organization skills which I have gained
enabling me to able to develop an excellent structure for my essays. In my first essays, I was
struggling had to build an introduction that would not only be clear to the readers but also would

cultivate their interest to read the whole of the rest of the article. My introduction thus appeared
ambiguous and was very general as from the feedback I would regularly obtain from my
Instructor. Through engaging in regular essay writing, this has really changed. This is evident in
my cause and effect essay where I was able to introduce the easy with a personal history of the
perception of the people with regard to the water they took At home, people subconsciously
believe that the water they drink, wash clothes with and bathe in is clean’ (Kulhahay 1, par. 1)
. I was able to place the audience to the issue I was addressing by giving their general view on
how they treat water contamination which was the subject of my writing. In this easy I was able
to introduce the readers to the controversy that had me to write the paper i.e. both leaving the
water untreated and treating it is a challenge as in treating various harmful chemicals e.g.
chlorides and fluorides contaminates the water. Through such an introduction, readers are
captivated to follow through the paper and understand how well the controversy can be
eliminated. In this essay I also included a thesis statement which would give the audience my
position regarding the issue I was discussing.
The second area of improvement is on the use of the transitions. This was through the
words like however, despite, consequently, in addition etc which I regularly used in my
argumentative essay on the immigration. Such use of transitions enables the reader to
differentiate between the various viewpoints of the author making hence increased unity and
coherence. Further transitions enabled my audience to easily follow through the article as they
would connect one idea to the next identifying where was making new points and the previous
points were ending. It is through such excellent use of the transitions I was able to build up
arguments and also portray the other counter arguments with the same reasoning For example
illustrating that immigrants would easily for lottery application but on the other hand, they had to

know the government’s history which would be difficult for them (Kulhahay 2, par. 1) . Such
would make the readers view both sides of the argument in the argumentative essay on
immigration. Lastly the transition enabled me appropriately make a summative conclusion for the
ideas I had developed through the essay. For example in my cause and effect essay, I was able to
summarize by generalizing that any city or region in was a victim to unsafe water supplies
behind closed doors (3, par 1). Such use of the transitions throughout my essay was very
important in emphasizing my aim of the writing the essay which was to sensitize people of the
increased rates of water contamination made my essay easy for the readers to follow.
The third area of my improvement was the ability to select and use the right vocabulary to
explain different themes in my different essays I was writing. This has excellently enabled me to
communicate my ides more vividly with a high command of knowledge. The essay writing
experience has enabled me to understand on which vocabularies and which areas I should apply
them to bring out the ideas I wish to communicate. In the essay on the child labors i.e. Live free
and starve, I was able to use vocabularies to bring out clearly the effect of the child labor to their
health conditions ‘their ribs sticking out..’ , also ‘They trailed after us begging for a few
paise’(Divakaruni 2, par 2). Such use of vocabularies helped me bring out clearly the desperation
and disillusionment state the children were in. Secondly the use of the vocabularies enabled me
emphasize my points. In the same essay, I was able to emphasize the negative impact that the
children would bring back to their families after going back for the families didn’t have the
financial ability to cater for them ‘…..the extra weight that capsized the already raft of their
family finances’ (2, par. 3). Such enabled me to show my mastery of the subject I was arguing
out i.e. the effect of child labor to families.

Though I have made such great improvement in the three areas, I still require improving
on my use of the passive voice. I find myself regularly using passive voice in many of my essays
which may lead to loss of interest from the audience. Through the use of active voice, I ensured
that the readers are able to identify with the message I communicated as they viewed me as part
of the ideas I was recommending in my article. In addition, an active voice makes it easy for the
author to communicate his/her ideas with easy, in a direct and clear way. Through the use of
passive voice in my essays, I found myself using unnecessary words which would make it hard
for my audience to follow through my ideas. Thus such areas require me to improve to gain
clarity and make my essays direct to the point. To help improve on this, I will increase my
reading to review many of my essays and the feedback given to the essays written by my fellow
course mates and other authors. I will be taking more time to plan my work to ensure I tailor the
message direct to the audience which eliminates the use of passive voice. In addition, I will be
taking more time to reflect on my essays and review them after writing to include the active voice
in the areas where such is necessary. In general the essay writing experience was great and has
transformed me to a great writer. Such helped eliminate the fears I had in writing and can now
easily communicate my ideas to the different audience.
