Reflection Essay on the book “HER UNDERGROUND”
This essay is a reflection on the book “Her Underground” by Undine Celeste and Donna
Giancola, 2012. This book; a work of fiction, starts with an exposition to the formula of
Eleusinian mysteries and the existence of a Goddess; the origin of existence and creation. The
authors create a scenario of a society built on strong religious beliefs and the existence of a
supernatural being ‘Goddess' is acknowledged. The women of the society went to a cave above
the Aegean Sea where they celebrated life's mysteries after harvests, get spiritual power and
transformation. However, on one of the occasions when the cave closed, the women stood still
with no fear. They believed their strength was within them and that that cave was to be the origin
of life and not death. They drunk the draught and strongly prepared for the next cycle holding
that the divinity of life is reflected by joy and love. Demeter’s temple, at Mount Eleusis, has
become a tourist attraction scenery, (Undine Celeste and Donna Giancola, 2-5)
The court ruling in one of the women’s cases astonishes Alex, a student at Suffolk
University Law School. In her way to school by train, she is greatly disturbed when she reflects
on the day’s lesson and is moved by thoughts if the students will be in a position to make right
decisions on land, law, and government or they will similarly get mistaken as the judge in the
court. However, her thoughts are greatly interrupted by the sound of the Big Dig. A more
catastrophic sound came out of the Big Dig. This one scared the Mayor Morino and got
concerned about the competency of the project, as he was accountable for everything that

happened. When the Big Dig uncovered an underground chamber beneath the Boston city, many
among the top archeologists of the Harvard University were consulted. This underground
chamber contained an ancient prophecy. This is revealed by the conversation between the Mayor
and John Doherty. Archeologists are sought for advice. The Mayor insisted that among them be
Richard Lyon who came with Alexandra Martin. (Giancola Donna and Celeste Undine, 36)
Alex’s observations on the scene of Big Dig were terrible and was greatly moved by the
wailing and the voices of homeless street prophets who demanded money. The Big Dig rapture
brought a big challenge to the Academy of if they were to be wrong in the investigation, what
reputation it would build on its history. Alex consults her friend Diana Wolfe, who was
convinced that the Big Dig had raptured one of the biggest energy centers in the world. The
discussion about matriarchal culture between Diana and Richard had gone beyond boundaries.
Now, Alex postponing her lunch offer by Diana in order to meet Richard put Diana under worry.
Richard, however, gathered evidence about the site's underground hollow existence before he
met Alex, whom he thought she would help.
This Big Dig is associated with a lot of scandals and the Mayor is not willing to let the
facts about the rapture that caused the death. The city is then needed to stay silent on this until
information is gathered. The media attention is feared to investigate this incident. Apart from the
historical preservation, there are several controversies. The meeting between Alex and Richard is
aimed to seek information about the exploded site whether it was a native ancient site. Alex
acted wisely not to open up to the discovery to Richard without having any basic proof, as this
would expose her to political grounds when the issue reaches the Mayor, (Undine Celeste and
Donna Giancola 205).

Alex internalized the patriarchal power while Diana did not. The two have grown
intimacy since young and trust each other. However, women who internalized this law were
crushed by lack of their own voice. Diana knew this and because of her faith, she kept it silent.
Diana's dreams about a crone archetype of a woman standing deep in the middle of the earth
were like kind of warning. This made her think that the Big Dig was not supposed to be carried
out beneath Boston as this would bring more destructive effects to the city. Diana connected her
dreams to the Big Dig. Alex thought the same that the Big Dig project has resulted in many
problems, (Undine Celeste and Donna Giancola, 298).
Their conversation ends revealing the interest of concern that Diana has about the Big
Dig since there is very little solid earth, especially around Washington. The rest of the Boston is
landfill. There is fear that the Big Dig could unearth most of the land, which as well as according
to Diana led to the rapture of the greatest world's centers of energy. In addition, Richard was
constantly involved in a mission to destroy the chamber and bury its sacred prophecy and
knowledge contained in it.
