Ways in Which Healthcare Reform Has Affected and May Affect the Financial Delivery of
Healthcare Today and in the Future
The health reform legislation of 2010 introduced changes to the payment and delivery
system with the aim of stopping the growing cost of health care in the United States. Mostly, its
effects are felt in the overall budget allocated to medical facilities as well as insurance coverage.
In this regard, the federal government spends a substantial amount of funds to cover families that
struggle with hospital insurance. The legislation changes introduced in the medical sector affect
national health expenditures through increased medical and administration costs.
The health care changes have extended health insurance coverage to all Americans. As a
result, medical spending has increased. According to Leonard (2016), the federal government
spent $936 billion on health care programs in 2015. The amount, which catered for Medicaid,
Medicare, tax subsidies, and Children's Health Insurance program, is higher than that of social
security. Furthermore, it is expected to increase in the future as the baby boomers come of age
and continue to enroll in the program. As such, it is evident that the financial delivery of
healthcare today is high, and it is projected to increase in the future.
At the time of inception of the Affordable Care Act, there were high hopes that the
administrative costs would reduce considerably. This belief arose from the assumption that the
government would help people get health care more easily or at a cheaper price. However, the
reform increased the expenses of the private health insurance. For example, the total
administrative costs per person rose from $414 in 2013 to $893 in 2014 (Book, 2017). In this
regard, the changes affected the healthcare industry negatively and will impact its financial
delivery in the future.

The Importance of Collaborative Leadership in Today's Complex and Changing
Healthcare Industry
An organization that adopts collaborative leadership recruits personnel who can achieve
effective results using efficient mechanisms across its internal and external boundaries.
Healthcare environment, like other sectors, is becoming increasingly complicated. To this effect,
medical practitioners must be intelligent and resourceful, which can be achieved through
collaborative leadership (Atkinson, 2011). Patient-care teams that work together are essential in
ensuring that medical services are not left to the technical experts only. On the contrary, there is
a need to have an effective leadership as well as a vocal staff for presenting medical issues.
Also, hospitals incorporate business-minded clinicians who understand business strategy.
Given the increasing need for accountability, resource management is a crucial ingredient of the
day-to-day operations in the health sector. As such, leaders collaborate to oversee employee
engagement, financial performance, and patient satisfaction as well as the overall results. This
way, the industry upholds transparency and integrity in all its engagements. Also, contemporary
health care stewards need entrepreneurial skills that help them generate new ideas and seize new
opportunities. For example, they are supposed to be innovative and be ready to embrace cost-
effective patient care methods. Notably, as healthcare reforms unfold, they bring along better
ways of managing costs without compromising the objectives of the industry.
Besides that, collaborative leadership includes larger talent pool, which transcends the
traditional healthcare specialty. Given the new structures and models designed for the current
reforms, there is a need for leaders to work together in the creation and implementation of
solutions to issues affecting such changes. The primary objective of health care is to provide

qualified and compassionate patient care. Consequently, medics should work harmoniously to
create a culture that emphasizes and observes professional practice and mutual respect.
