Report on Major Events and its Impact on the UK Tourism Industry
Events as major catalysts in the attraction of visitors to a country have a significant
impact on the host nation. Major events attract tourists to the region, and therefore, have a lasting
positive effect on the country. Moreover, such events have the potential to have environmental,
social and political adverse effects on the communities in the host nation. Principles of
sustainable development and planning, however, have proven to harmonize the impacts
(Michelle 4).
Positive Impact and Negative Impacts
Research suggests that the 2012 Olympic and Para-Olympic Games held in London
contributed to foreign trade close to £2.2 billion on the tourism industry (Michelle 16). This was
as a result of a plunge in domestic and international visitors, hotel bookings and tour operations.
Moreover, the Rugby World Cup contributed atleast £949 million, as the expenditure, generated
by tourists drawn to the event and created 21000 new jobs in the tourism sector. Major
international music events, like Liverpool Sound City, have brought about new multicultural
practices in tourism (Michelle 18).Large-scale events like the 1998 Commonwealth Games and
the 1981 Springbok Rugby Tour have had politically motivated boycotts of tourism workers
