Research Design
Compare and contrast the characteristics of non-experimental (descriptive and
correlational) and experimental research designs
Qualitative and quantitative methods are used to gather, analyze, as well as, interpret data
using both experimental and non-experimental designs. The non-experimental design is made up
of correlational and descriptive research methods. Descriptive research is used in the
identification and description of behavior among the participants to provide detailed records or
analysis (Kothari, 2004). On the other hand, correlational research helps in determining the
relationships that exist between two or more variables although it is difficult to identify whether
the variables influence or determine one another. Experimental design manipulates one variable
to determine the causality (Kothari, 2004).
States your research question, and specify whether the proposed research aims to
describe, predict, or explain
How effective are antidepressant, group therapy and placebo in treating post-traumatic
stress disorders? The implied research question aims at predicting the effectiveness of various
methods of treating posttraumatic stress as indicated by National Institute of Mental Health (n.d).
Choose a research design to investigate your research question. Explain why this
model is appropriate for the study
The study will utilize the qualitative experimental research design to predict the type of
treatment that is more useful than the other. However, the research requires the approval from
the ethics committee of the institution where the research will be conducted, as well as, signed

consent with the patients, whose bodies will be used to detriment the effectiveness of the
treatment. Experimental methods are the most suitable because they help in determining the
relationships between the variables to determine the effect-outcome relationships of the
treatments (Kothari, 2004).
Provide a brief overview of the study you would design
The study will take place in a health care setting and the participants will be referred as
samples that will be chosen randomly from a group of volunteers suffering from post-traumatic
stress. The study will use three groups each with 20 participants, who will be selected randomly.
The first group will be subjected to antidepressants to treat post-traumatic stress in addition to
group therapy session. The second group will be subjected to placebo in addition to therapy
sessions while the third group three will use only group and individual therapy.
