REVIEW OF ACORN SOUP 2
Review of Acorn Soup
Acorn Soup is a novel written by L. Frank and published by Heyday
Publishers and released in 1999. The book uses the technique of cartoons to explain
the various themes, a technique that works well based on the content of the book. In
its narration, the author develops a comic story with a clear storyline which is
elaborated using visual element to reinforce the readability of the text. The author
bring out his understanding of the life between different generation; illustratively,
between the ancient life and the modern contemporary life by taking a position with
one leg on the ancient time and the other on the current world. Therefore, giving an
insight into the opportunity to make comparison of the different worlds and hence
creating an chance for the readers to make judgment about the two worlds. In the
story, the author introduces characters who have the ability to depict the unique
elements of the two worlds which is vital in understanding the evolution that has
occurred throughout the period between the two generations.
The first scene of the narrative introduces the main character who has been
used to develop the entire story, Coyote, a California’s main trickster, who has the
ability to fit into both worlds. The character is introduced in a scene where he is
waiting for a bus while dressed in a suite, a necktie, a briefcase, and a deer-headed
decoy mask (Frank, 1999). The dressing of the cartoon portray of Coyote is the
picture that Frank intends to build in the minds of the readers which is the
combination of the ancient world and the contemporary world. At this point, it is
possible to make a rough comparison between the two eras based on the common
cultures and practices. Notably, during this time, all the news that came from
California had some inscription of love and great anticipation from the subscriber’s
and hence the writer uses cartoons with backward writings to slow down the readers
