Acorn Soup is a novel written by L. Frank and published by Heyday
Publishers and released in 1999. The book uses the technique of cartoons to explain
the various themes, a technique that works well based on the content of the book. In
its narration, the author develops a comic story with a clear storyline which is
elaborated using visual element to reinforce the readability of the text. The author
bring out his understanding of the life between different generation; illustratively,
between the ancient life and the modern contemporary life by taking a position with
one leg on the ancient time and the other on the current world. Therefore, giving an
insight into the opportunity to make comparison of the different worlds and hence
creating an chance for the readers to make judgment about the two worlds. In the
story, the author introduces characters who have the ability to depict the unique
elements of the two worlds which is vital in understanding the evolution that has
occurred throughout the period between the two generations.
The first scene of the narrative introduces the main character who has been
used to develop the entire story, Coyote, a California’s main trickster, who has the
ability to fit into both worlds. The character is introduced in a scene where he is
waiting for a bus while dressed in a suite, a necktie, a briefcase, and a deer-headed
decoy mask (Frank, 1999). The dressing of the cartoon portray of Coyote is the
picture that Frank intends to build in the minds of the readers which is the
combination of the ancient world and the contemporary world. At this point, it is
possible to make a rough comparison between the two eras based on the common
cultures and practices. Notably, during this time, all the news that came from
California had some inscription of love and great anticipation from the subscriber’s
and hence the writer uses cartoons with backward writings to slow down the readers

expectations. The author achieves this by creating Coyote, who has wild guises and
contradictions, the trickster and the victim, the Indian’s Wise Fool, and the creator of
the universe and Buffon (Frank, 1999). All this characters and events had some things
in common, and one of the things is that they all had one foot on the ancient world
and the other on the modern world.
Additionally, from reading the book, each cartoon creates the impression that
is capable of placing the readers in an improbable and whimsical world. It also give
an insight to the occasions that builds the ability to challenge the stereotypes of
California’s Indians and the perception about their encounters in general based on
Coyote’s guises contradictions. In the book, the author develops an improbable,
whimsical, but yet a contradictory real world which is a combination of the old and
the new ways of life. The book feature the descendants of the Ajachmem and the
Tongva people who lived in South California by bringing out the unique sense of
humor which has liking of both the natives and the non-native. In a nutshell, the
drawings are a depiction of the ironies of the indigenous life present in the
contemporary world. The entire book is a collection of images that bring into sight the
ancient life of native California with a twisted view of the enticing intelligence,
eccentric, and humor that has helped them stand the test of time.
