Smoke signals are one of the oldest Canadian American film produced and directed

by Chris Eyre based on a short story. Both the films show conditions of pervasive poverty

that leads to the development of cultural adaptation. The smoke signal film highlights various

cultures of poverty. For instance, Thomas has no sense of the history of their family. How his

parents looked like before being consumed by fire. His grandmother feels hopeless after she

witnesses the burning of their house.

The film represents the culture and nature of the Native Americans who are the

Indians. These cultures include humor and dignity represented by ordinary people. Humour

for the poor people is a way of enjoying their lives and is a means of psychological survival.

The winters bone film provides the poor with hope and courage to help avoid the

moral judgment that is accustomed to stereotypes. However, poverty provides room for

violence especially for the men where Ree is beaten with the women of his family.

Similarly, the difficulties experienced in the rural landscape expose these marginalized

groups to harsh decisions such as engaging in alcoholism especially adult parents.

The rural landscape presents various burdens on care as most of its inhabitant tend to

engage in other activities apart from engaging in education to acquire a waged work to help

meet household costs. Such is experienced by women who have to give up their dreams and

ambitions to have the capability of taking care of the household demands. Such life instances

present long-term complications towards the quest to acquire opportunities to better lives.

Such are the causes of limited opportunities for the people in the rural environment.

Rural poverty is a product of poor infrastructure, which in turn prevents mobility and

development. Similarly, the rural life tends to promote limited access to news and media

outlets, which in turn promotes social isolation. Social isolation is a product that hinders the

integration of the urban society. The people leaving in the rural environment have limited

access to better employment opportunities because they access low paid work that tend to be

seasonal due to pay fluctuations. This increases chances of little income security in the

household. Rural America presents higher and persistent rates of poverty.

The country life influences the lives of poor people due to the high availability of low

wage employment that is characterized by high illiteracy levels. Similarly, the minority

people experience spatial inequalities in the urban areas because of the limitation to free

access to employment opportunities. This limits the improvement of one’s ability to inhibit

the problem of social mobility. However, the poor people inhabiting the urban areas struggle

with low levels of education that present them with few skills to undertake advanced

employment opportunities. Therefore, the problem forces them to work in poor working

conditions for survival.

burden of care. These families have mainly survived on odd and minimal jobs to support their

households. This tends to promote poor leaving conditions. However, the scarcity or limited

resources increase poverty rates because of limited access resources result in poor living

conditions. Therefore, there is an increased health risk among adults as the pressure to

manage larger household promotes depression, engagement to alcoholism. The lack of

resources in rural America is presented with poor housing conditions due to severe rates of

rural poverty. The lack of resources affects housing affordability to the rural people because

of limited access to the available resources.

The lack of resources occurs due to the increased disparities in income generating

activities. Similarly, resources are more available in the urban areas, which increase the

availability of income generating opportunities.
