Self-Career Planning Report
Introduction
Everyone particularly individuals who haven’t realized their career goals still have
dreams that they work hard to achieve. The journey to realization of these goals is a planned
process that begins with self-assessment. Self-assessment is amongst the best ways of
determining an individual’s career goals and the best avenue for their achievement. It presents a
person’s interests, values, personality preferences, experiences, aptitudes and, skills. Self-
analysis builds a foundation for career goal identification, job analysis, profile gaps and
concluding thoughts. This paper presents my career plan while highlighting a self-analysis, goal
identification, job analysis, gaps between my current profile and the target profile and a
conclusion.
Self-Analysis
Personality entails individual’s patterns of behaving, thinking, and feeling. Understanding
of personal differences in particular personality characteristics such as irritability and sociability
is key in establishing a good personality between people. Personality also involves having a
comprehensive understanding that explains orientations in career choices. Personality
significantly affects how one relates to other people while in the working environment as one is
entitled to communicate with fellow employees, employers, and outsiders (Barrett & Green,
2011). Therefore, personality is a crucial consideration while making career choices.
After taking personality tests, I learned that I am a quick thinker, slow to react to
emotions and behave well in the company of friends particularly in the presence of new faces.
As a business oriented person, I can effectively interact with business people. I have excellent
interaction skills particularly with people who we share common views or have similar interests.

I am a diverse person who has learned to listen to every person no matter what the person is
saying. I do listening more than talking, and I believe that I would make a good chief executive
officer in the future.
As I dream to establish my organization or become a CEO of one of the renown
organizations, career anchors will be a stepping stone towards the realization of this dream.
Career anchors in career planning g include attitudes, values, motives, and talents. These
elements provide an individual with a sense of direction and stability towards a career. Career
anchors are drivers or motivators towards the realization of personal goals (Schein & Van
Maanen, 2016). Career anchor is a component of a person’s self-concept that a person would not
easily give up even when handling challenging choices in life.
Achievement of short terms goals acts as motivators to the achievement of the long-term
goals. Throughout the journey of my career, I get motivated whenever I achieve new goals. I get
rejuvenated to work harder for the achievement of the long-term goals. I am still at the
exploration stage of my career as I am still to get settled on the career of choice. Exploration
stage is a transition between college and the work. This stage has little relevance as it occurs
before the period of employment. I am finishing up on the college education, and thoughts of
future work run through my head particularly when an almost winding up this course.
I have professionally trained as a manager with diverse managerial skills in various
environments particularly those relating to business. I have learned the interlocking functions
related to management such as the creation of the corporate policy, controlling, planning,
organizing and directing organizational resources in the achievement of organizational goals and
objectives. My self-assessment results convinced me that I best fit a business person and not only
a business person, but a person related to management. I, therefore, choose to become a CEO.

Career Goal Identification
Becoming a CEO isn’t just a jump into a career as it begins from early preparation
particularly from an educational background. This career is a lifetime process with a variety of
goals and objectives to achieve before arriving at it. In fact, most CEOs of the giant
organizations have taken more than a decade to climb the ladder from a mere organizational
employee to becoming a CEO (Dey, Engel & Liu, 2011). Usually, the journey consists of various
stages characterized by promotions and shifts from one company to the other. Competency and
vivid achievements are in most cases the pillars for the rise promotions.
Working first as a human resource manager would increase my experience in
management of organizational resources particularly the human resources. Interactions with
diverse people from diverse backgrounds with different views, communication styles, and work
cultures will be part of my career development. As I get prepared climbing the ladder, I will have
to work under and alongside different heads and organizations with distinct visions and policies.
The CEO is the overall head of an organization who foresees all the organizational functions.
CEOs provide organizational direction for companies and making of critical decisions.
I believe that from a scratch of human resource officer irrespective of any department or
level, working hard and making remarkable achievements for the organization will be a stepping
stone to my success. I will develop effective communication, management skills and leadership
as well as develop abilities for working under pressure and deal with stressful situations.
However, becoming a chief executive officer is my ultimate goal.
Job Analysis
My target job that matches my ultimate goal is a human resource officer, and I, therefore,
need to become one. A bachelor’s degree in business administration specializing on the human

resource option would be a foundation towards my ultimate career goal. Other avenues for the
attainment of my career goal would be public administration, business administration, and liberal
arts. Since I plan to fully settle in the business without a limitation of a particular industry, I must
be diverse in other business courses.
Human resource managers get involved in core organizational functions related to
training, redundancies, recruitment, career development, compensation and benefits, employee
relations, industrial relations, disciplinary and employment law and grievance issues. Human
resource managers have the roles of keeping the organization up to date with labor laws such as
employment laws that keep on changing with time (Dessler, n.d.). In medium sized companies,
general human resource managers undertake all the human resource management roles unlike in
the large organizations where the human resource manager deals with the entire range of human
resource activities. In giant companies, human resource managers are designated with different
roles such as employee relations, recruitment, learning, and development.
In most of the countries, becoming a CEO requires that a person attains master’s degree
program or just similar graduate degree. A master’s degree program can be pursued either after
one gets employed or just before getting employed. Most of the scholars in master’s degree are
mostly working in managerial or corporate positions and end up enrolling in MBA programs or
part-time professions that integrate knowledge acquired practically into the curriculum. Most of
the MBA students take classes in organizational theories, finance, strategic management and
managerial economics.
For one to become a CEO in the future, one must undergo internships at various levels
particularly on the undergraduate program. Most companies seek to recruit candidates who have
experience in relevant fields. Others seek recruits who have studied in broad options that could

contribute their career while in that company. Subjects that equip a person with international
business knowledge and practical skills are relevant in the appointment of a CEO. A large
percentage of the MBA program necessitates that learners identify a concentration to narrow
their studies on. These scholars can take advantage of such an opportunity by picking a selection
that best suits their area of interest or industry. In a business world, they can concentrate on
finance, marketing, environmental sustainability, information technology, administration and
public policy.
According to Mintzberg 1990, managers have different roles classified into different
categories. He highlights ten roles of managers as a leader, figurehead, negotiator, monitor,
liaison, resource allocator, spokesperson, disseminator, monitor, disturbance handler, and
entrepreneur (Dessler, n.d.). The general roles of a manager are enshrined in the five roles of
management that include organizing, planning, staffing, directing, and controlling.
Managers ought to have excellent planning skills to ensure that all the organizational
activities and resources are well planned. They should have capacities for organizing people and
resources for the accomplishment of organizational goals and objectives. Through leadership,
they provide a sense of direction to the subordinates such that all resources have a concerted
effort towards the realization of various targets (Dessler, n.d.). Managers particularly the human
resource managers have the roles of recruiting people human resources, performance reviews
and establishing levels of promotion. Control is a function of management that ensures that
certain standards of operations are met within the organization that would steer the organization
to desired levels.
CEO is the highest ranking top executive manager in any organization or corporation.
CEOs job roles vary depending on the organizational goals, products, mission and the need to

operation. They have the responsibility of overseeing the overall organizational functions and
have the final authority of making crucial decisions within the organization. Sometimes, they
have specific functions that depend on the nature of the organization. CEOs job descriptions vary
from one company to the other. Even the daily functions of CEOs are different, but they maintain
the organizational position towards providing a framework that is constant across all the
managerial levels.
However, there are particular roles that all the CEOs are expected to perform within their
scope if their work. They communicate, create and implement the organization’s mission, vision,
and the entire direction. They are leaders in developing and implementing the overall strategy of
the organization. CEOs solicit guidance and advice from the board of directors when appropriate.
Like a human resource manager, they direct, guide, lead and evaluate the work of other managers
within the organization respective to the structure of the organization (Dessler, n.d.). Formulate
and implement strategic plans that give the overall direction of the company. CEOs are part of
the management, but they oversee all the operations of the organization from a broader
perspective and to determine whether the organization functions towards the achievement of its
strategic plan.
Identification of the Gaps
Having trained as a procurement officer, I am currently working in one of the mid-sized
business organizations within my locality. I have a degree in procurement. I am in my mid-
twenties, and I have three years experience working in this organization as a procurement officer.
Within my lines of duties, I have developed a desire to extend my procurement roles to
managerial roles. Becoming a chief executive officer is my ultimate goal in the future. I have a

strong desire of becoming an overall head of an entity. I would like to develop my potentials in
the business, and I will have to undergo various stages.
There is a big gap between my current profile and my desired job profile in the next ten
years. I have to concentrate on management. I will have to go back to school and learn
management course before I advance it into a master’s degree in business administration. I plan
to undertake the course on part-time as I work so that I can continue advancing my practical
knowledge in the business field. Within the next five years, my goal is to become qualified for a
management position even to the highest ranks in big organizations. I won’t limit myself to
particular industries since management applies to all industries, but I put business careers as a
priority. I am a business oriented person, and this is one of the most motivating factors for my
continued pursue to achieve highly in the business world. I believe that through learning and
while working I will achieve it. My ultimate goal for my career in the future is becoming a CEO
of a big organization or steering a small organization into a giant company.
