One of the long-term goals of United States of America has been to improve learning
service. She aims at increasing community service, particularly among the undergraduates. Their
undergraduate learning is enriched through such experiences, they are also exposed to the various
complex issues within the society. Consequently, the opportunity enriches their undergraduate
experience. Service learning enables the participants to meaningfully impact the society and helps
them to acquire certain virtues such as; good citizenship, and being civic responsible.
Some of the national problems can only be solved by encouraging many students to
volunteer. This is because the government may not have adequate resources needed to facilitate
every societal issue. The youths, in particular, should be encouraged to volunteer because their
attitude and preferences are formed at that stage. Therefore, the volunteer service would
considerably impact their feelings of apathy. Personally, I participated in the gardening activity.
Initially, I thought that it was a simple activity hence I would enjoy. My first application of
theoretical concepts into practical skills of gardening was at St. Thomas University where I really
enjoyed the beautiful sceneries at the yard. I had an opportunity to interact with different types of
crops and flowers that bloomed in the garden. Some of them I had no idea that they existed. I was
appointed to dig up homes for carrots.
Even though the activity seemed light there were various challenges that I encountered.
They include; the scorching heat from the sun that made my experience quite uncomfortable, the
activity was tiresome and seemed hard labor. Previously, I had a passion for gardening for it
seemed interesting. Even for, I had a thousand and one reasons to give up, I kept focused. The
other problem that I encountered was the fact that nearly all the seeds are GMO made. Such seeds
produce fruits that are impossible to use for their seeds. In turn, they produce nothing if planted.
