Sexual Deviant Case Study: Joran van da Sloot
Question One
Deviant behaviors are actions portrayed by an individual that is contrary to the accepted
norms or standard of a community. Joran van der Sloot was a victim of deviant behavior, which
came out on several occasions that indicated his turning points. Gambling addiction is one of the
turning points of Joran to deviance. The case study reveals that he used to gamble on the credit
that his father set up for him, at times amounting to a line of $5000. His gambling habits offered
a platform where he used to party with friends and some claim that he used to drug rape women.
In the year 2005, Joran was linked to the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, but due to his
father connections, he got away with it. Later, he was involved in a series of deviant behaviors
such as extortion, lying and finally convicted after he confessed to the murder of Stephany
Flores.
In my opinion, the fact that Joran was involved in the death of two girls who are believed
to have been in a sexual relationship is enough evidence to classify him as a sexual deviant. In
addition, he was accused of drug raping women at the Casino and also showed other
interconnected behaviors such as extortion, lying and lack of empathy which all indicates he is a
sexual deviant.
Question Two
The privileges that the family of Joran offered led to a murderer walking free among the
public is debatable. On the one hand, every citizen is innocent unless proven guilty. In the case
of Holloway, it is not clear what led to her demise, and it will be unjust to put Joran behind bars
with only allegations. In addition, Joran revealed that the cause of her death was due to chocking
caused by over intoxication which if true means he was innocent.
CASE STUDY 3
On the other hand, this statement is true by how evidence was flagged by the justice
system no matter how solid it appeared to be because of the special connections of his family.
For instance, when surveillance video at the hotel revealed otherwise to the testament provided
by Joran and the two brothers, the charges were dropped for no justifiable reasons, and Joran and
his father set free. In 2007, the judges overruled new evidence presented by Han Mos, the chief
prosecutor at the time, which showed that Joran had posted news on Holloway death on the
internet the same day she disappeared. A year later, Dutch journalist Peter, led Joran to a
confession on a hidden camera, but this too was deemed not to hold on a court of law.
Consequently, it is undeniable that the privileges Joran had from his wealthy and legal-
connections of his parents led to a murderer walking free.
Question Three
Sexual deviance is a condition characterized by lack of empathy, hostility, and
reoccurrence of the prohibited behavior relative to the practice of sex. Hostility is the first
character of sexual deviant exhibited by Joran, which is vivid on his involvement in the murder
of two girls. On his last victim, Stephany Flores, her body was covered in blood with a broken
neck and showed sign of struggle is an indication of aggressiveness and hostility. Another
character of sexual deviant exhibited by Joran is lack of empathy. His involvement in the
disappearance of Natalee did not stop him from extorting money from them. Additionally, he
published several articles regarding Natalee disappearance so that he could make money to feed
his gambling problem, which is an indication of lack of empathy.
According to the characteristics of Joran, medical and psychological intervention could
have helped. For instance, the death of Stephany resulted from anger and aggressive behavior,
which is treatable. In addition, rehabilitation is another effective intervention such that Joran

could have been helped to overcome his gambling addiction and also changing his thinking
pattern.
Question Four
Recently, the society has a changed attitude towards what is considered acceptable sexual
behavior. Gay sex is one of such changes whereby today, it is legal for men to be intimate and
even get married (Sexual Deviance, 2011). Premarital sex is another area that has changed with
time, and it is no longer a big deal for teens to engage in sex. Statistics indicate that teenagers
engaging in sexual intercourse are higher than it was a few years back, which can be attributed to
modernization (Marshal et al., 2015). Such changes can be detrimental to societal values and
perceptions of what is right and wrong. For instance, gay sex can render boy child susceptible to
sex-related offenses from male counterparts since the moral guidance that prohibited such act has
faded. On the other hand, being lenient on premarital sex can be disadvantageous to the young
generation. As a result, poor performance in school, early pregnancy spread of STI’s, and sugar
daddies scenarios are some of the outcomes of such deviance (Dishkova, 2017).
In the United States, such deviance will influence crime rate in some ways. Drugs, rape,
and murder will be the possible crimes that will escalate with effect to such deviance behaviors.
Additionally, teenagers, who drop out of schools due to pregnancy and are underage and
unskilled they resolve to peddle drugs, prostitution, and mugging to fend for themselves which
will ultimately reduce the quality of life in the US.
