Ship breaking in Bangladesh
Ship breaking activities entails the act of facilitating the dismantling of the seemingly
obsolete vessel’s structure for disposal and scrapping. The activity is often conducted at a
dismantling yard whereby many activities tend to occur. The important activities that often occur
while dismantling the vessels include removal of both the equipment and gear that are on the
ships and breaking down and recycling the various components of the ship. The developing
world tends to serve as the host to the vast majority of the ship breaking efforts.
Some of the important stakeholders to the ship breaking activities include the laborers
that are mostly the citizens of Bangladesh. The workers mainly comprise of the individuals of
varied age groups with the majority being below 22 years. The preference for performing the
ship breaking activities in Bangladesh arise from the fact that the citizens tend to offer a cheaper
source of labor with the government’s lack of enforcement of both the industrial policies and
work safety providing a perfect opportunity for exploitation by the ship breaking business
owners. The ship breaking organizations as well serve as stakeholders since they attract the
shipping companies towards ensuring the effective dismantling of their ships at the several yards.
The ship breaking firms mostly owned by the families exploits some of the evident poor states of
the people to expose them to harsh conditions through paying low wages while providing poor
working conditions (Sujauddin et al., 2017). The government of Bangladesh as well serves as a
stakeholder through its introduction of national policies and legislation towards improving both
the environmental and occupational health and safety standards in the shipping yards. However,
the lack of proper governance and lack of enforcement of the policies and laws has created a
loophole that has played a crucial role in promoting corruption in the industry hence preventing
implementation of rules for protecting the interests of the people.

Outsourcing entails contracting out of part of the existing internal activities to other
people or firms. Through outsourcing, the various shipping companies are capable of ensuring
reduction of their labor costs by seeking services from other developing nations such as
Bangladesh. Outsourcing sees the company seeking the services of poor individuals that are less
illiterate who solely depend on the wages from their labor for survival. Consequently, the ship
breaking companies are capable of exploiting the weaknesses posed by the citizens towards
maximizing their income through ignoring the various interests of the people such as availing
protective equipment and the right tools for performing the various tasks that entail dismantling
the ships (YPSA, 2012). Outsourcing, therefore, plays a significant role in allowing for the
different large shipping firms to ensure that they keep the labor costs low through hiring in the
emerging markets characterized by lower living standards.
The stakeholders that need to be responsible for the shipwrecking yards and the
employees are the government. The government bears the responsibility for ensuring the
protection of its citizens from potential danger such as explosions at the yards and other
accidents that arise due to the absence of the adequate protective gears (Nøst, et al., 2015). The
government is thus capable of ensuring management of the shipwrecking yards through setting
policies on assigning licenses that guide operations and ensuring observance of the labor laws by
the various operatives.
Improvement of the ship disposal is achievable through subjecting the different ships to
tests to ascertain the level of danger that they pose to the workers and ensuring that the staff is
equipped with the appropriate protective gears. Furthermore, ensuring that the staff has the
adequate knowledge and skills for disposing of the ships is crucial for preventing the occurrence
of accidents at the yards. Additionally, establishing adequate policies to guide the processes that

industry attributable to accidents.
