adjustments, advanced courses and difficult tests and papers. As much as eliminating college
tuition fees makes the idea of attending college seem realistic, the actual concept of having to
go through non-financial challenges in college may put some people off. Some people fail to
see the value of going to college. Making college free for all would not make these people
change their minds about attending. Therefore, a free college education would only help
those who are barred from college by cost.
Free college education had many negative financial implications, the taxpayer being
the worst victim. More than half of the American population doesn’t have a college degree
according to recent studies (Hardiman). Free college education would spark a surge in the
number of college applications. This would necessitate more classrooms, lecturers, and
resources to cater for the growing numbers. Since the students are not liable to pay fees, this
means that the government would have to cover the cost through its major revenue source-
taxes. Therefore, making college free would mean increased taxes imposed on the citizens.
In conclusion, a college education is vital for everyone, and everyone should have a
right to gain it. However, when providing free college education does more harm than good
to the economy, the process should be kept in check. As this essay has outlined, there are
more downsides than upsides to a free college education, and therefore it should not be
adopted. For people to attain quality education in college, they should pay for it.
