Should prostitution be legal? 
Survival is the epitome of human existence. Therefore, in the modern world, an 
individual seeks means to attain income to support their livelihood. There are numerous 
occupations that require varying qualifications and experiences (Kiernan 2). Prostitution is one 
of the oldest ‘professions’ in spite of the legality concerns. However, it is the role of the society 
to ensure whether it decriminalizes or prohibits the latter. 
In the United States, prostitution is illegal, and at least, 55,000 people endured arrests in 
2012 according to BJS. Additionally, they claim that the statistics represent a 34% reduction 
compared to the 2004 data. Regardless of the restrictions and penalties, prostitution continues to 
thrive (Kiernan 4). The age of its existence illustrates how difficult it is to eliminate the practice. 
Besides, it contributes about $ 55 Billion in the US economy. Relative it earns the country more 
than various sectors including, sporting goods and casinos (Kiernan 3). Nonetheless, it helps 
provide a lifeline to the people without sufficient skills to earn income to support their families. 
From a feminist perspective, it caters for the women more than the men; therefore, its eradication 
promotes condemnation and suffrage to the female gender. 
On the other hand, legalization of prostitution leads to the development of moral, sexual, 
and health issues. Also, it promotes contraction of sexually transmitted diseases, crime, and
