(a) Identify at least four facts concerning Abraham Lincoln.
(b) Define main vocabulary words.
(c) Match words to their main images.

A black top hat
Social studies Textbook pp. 4-8
Chart showing a drawing of a black hat
Abraham Lincoln Timeline cards
Vocabularies
Hat- A clothing worn on the head.
Lawyer- A person who practices law.
Card- A piece of stiff paper used for writing on.
President- The head of state like a country
Law- A rule that defines a correct behavior.
Century- A period of ten years.
History- The study of past events.
Wear- To put on something like a clothing on the body.
Procedure
Opening activity
Hold up a hat similar to the one worn by Lincoln and ask students what they think is the
reason for holding the hat.
Explain that the hat in my hand is the same as that worn by Abraham Lincoln. Inform
them that they are going to learn more about Lincoln’s life. Ask them to tell you
whatever they know about him and write them down on a flip chart. Inform them that
Lincoln was the America’s 16
th
President.
Dump the timeline cards in the hat and the jumble them. Tell the students that Lincoln
mostly kept papers and letters in the hat that he wore, the way you put them in the hat.
Tell the students that every piece has information and pictures showing the life of
Lincoln. Ask them to pick one piece and match them amongst themselves to get the year
and the special fact about Lincoln’s history.
Information Delivery
Inform learners that Lincoln did various things before becoming the president. Ask them
the kind of job they think he used to do. (Possible responses: Lawyer, teacher).
Explain to the learners the kind of job Lincoln did before becoming the 16
th
President.
Ask them to see the pictures in their books on page 6.
Ask them to find out other facts about Lincoln using the displayed chart and the book.
Upon doing that, bring out a drawn outline of Lincoln’s hat and ask learners to state the
facts learned from the book and the chart.
Ask learners to look at Lincoln’s timeline and state what might have been forgotten.
(“Lincoln returned to Illinois in 1849 to practice law”)
Review the pictures and text cards and explain the meanings of such words as the major
vocabularies.
Formative Assessment
Issue out blank sheets of paper to every learner and ask them to make their personal timeline of
their lives and that of Abraham Lincoln. Ask them to write at least two things to have happened
to them in their lives as well as those to have happened to Lincoln.
Summative Evaluation
Give students a test of writing down five key words that were written on the text cards and their
meanings.
