Social work and how it is distinct from other helping professions.
Social work is one of the professions under the bigger umbrella of helping professions.
However, this kind of profession is distinct from other related helping professions especially in
its technique of helping people to operate in an optimal manner within their environment. In this
regard, it is noted that unlike other professions, the person-in-environment tact is central to the
practice of social work. Using this standpoint, the professions in social work are trained in a
distinct manner so as to help clients in maximizing the opportunity for change in them and in the
situations facing them.
The other way in which social work is different from other professions in the helping
professions is in regard to its values and clear focus on pertinent social issues. Besides that, the
other way in which the profession is distinct from other helping professions is evident in the
manner in which it deals with issues. Last but not least, the uniqueness of social work
professions is in terms of its scope. It is noted, in this regard, that social work covers many areas
with some of them being, aging, child welfare, public health, disaster assistance, crisis
counselling, just to mention a few.
How my volunteer work, community engagement and life experienced influenced my
decision to pursue social work as a career.
Being a social worker has been my passion since I was at a tender age. The passion was
somewhat reflected in the course of pursuing my high school studies, where I wanted to do
nothing more but help my friends and peers with their problems. In this case, a majority of my
3
colleagues presented their problems to me with hope that they will get the best solutions. In such
a case, I could put myself in their shoes so that I may understand their feeling better.
Consequently, the outcome, in this regard, was always positive since most of the friends that I
have ever helped out gave me a positive feedback. The positive compliments from my friend is
what made me feel like I had all it takes to become a social worker, thus ending up coming with
a decision to join the profession.
Moreover, while still in high school, I was selected to be among the peer counselors.
While assuming this responsibility, I was taken for further training for me to be able to
effectively accomplish my role. The training, in this case, was so much interesting to me and
actually made me feel that I should do something related to counselling in future; which the
profession of social work sufficiently meets. Therefore, my decision to be a social worker is
based on my previous trainings related to the field; which turned out to be very interesting.
However, there were some drawbacks in my early years of exposure to the profession of
social work. One of the major drawbacks was that I lacked the knowledge and resources while I
was a high school student for me to offer proper assistance. Since I am passionate in the field of
social work, I decided to go an extra mile to acquire the required knowledge and skills that
would help me in effectively assisting those in need.
On the other hand, my experience is also one of the motivations for me to pursue social
work. For instance, I have personally experienced the impact of mental illness and the stigma
surrounding it on men; an aspect that has negatively impacted their health seeking behavior. In
order to prevent this problem from recurring in future, I believe that my knowledge in social
work will help in changing the stigma of men over mental illness, and will at the same time help
in convincing men to seek social services related to mental illness. Therefore, my decision to join
4
the social work profession is based on the need to improve the health and wellbeing of mentally
ill persons in the society.
Apart from my advocacy for men, I am also a feminist, who is interested in possibly
changing violence against women laws and policies. For the case of advocating for women, it
should be noted that the social work professions places more emphasis on social justice, with one
of the elements of social justice being favorable laws and policies that do not lean on one gender.
This end can be achieved through my assumption of one of the responsibility areas of social
work which is that of policy analysis and planning in such a manner that will enhance quality
between men and women.
Conversely, my previous community engagement vividly shows that I am an ardent
potential social worker. One of the events that I have participated at in the community is the open
streets Windsor; an event that promotes physical activity. It should be noted that physical activity
is part of the public welfare; which falls under one of the areas that is covered in social work.
Besides that, I also participated in the social work alumni event. All these events, provided me
with some exposure that is related to social work, hence the decision to become a social worker.
Nevertheless, I am currently volunteering at the habitat for human restore; which is an
initiative that sorts, prices, and stocks donated materials to earn money for building homes. The
aspect of building homes, which is an initiative that I am part of, aims at promoting social
welfare. Apart from volunteering at the habitat for human restore, I am also a volunteer at you
are the chef; which is an initiative that provides a platform whereby kids from underserved
schools and communities are taught about the basic cooking skills. Under this initiative, we
decided to diversify in such a manner that we are now working with students with disabilities
from a diverse population. All these voluntary experience that I am now gaining will serve a
5
great deal in the course of pursuing my future profession as a social worker, hence the decision
to become a social worker.
Lastly, my already acquired transferable skills that are related to social work are also the
major drivers for me to pursue the profession. For instance, I was able to acquire time
management skills in the course of my working at Marshalls. Apart from that, I also gained
interpersonal and communication skills at Sear. Besides that, I familiarized myself with working
as a team and the concept of multitasking at Subway. In addition, I boosted my confidence and
was also taught on how to pay attention to detail while I was at Best buy. I also learned to be
patient and flexible when I was acting as a Youth group facilitator. Last but not least, my levels
of cultural awareness heightened while I was working at the Habitat for humanity, and lastly I
became patient, creative and responsible in the course of assuming my role as a baby sitter. The
application of all these skills will be instrumental when assuming my role as a social worker.
