colleagues presented their problems to me with hope that they will get the best solutions. In such
a case, I could put myself in their shoes so that I may understand their feeling better.
Consequently, the outcome, in this regard, was always positive since most of the friends that I
have ever helped out gave me a positive feedback. The positive compliments from my friend is
what made me feel like I had all it takes to become a social worker, thus ending up coming with
a decision to join the profession.
Moreover, while still in high school, I was selected to be among the peer counselors.
While assuming this responsibility, I was taken for further training for me to be able to
effectively accomplish my role. The training, in this case, was so much interesting to me and
actually made me feel that I should do something related to counselling in future; which the
profession of social work sufficiently meets. Therefore, my decision to be a social worker is
based on my previous trainings related to the field; which turned out to be very interesting.
However, there were some drawbacks in my early years of exposure to the profession of
social work. One of the major drawbacks was that I lacked the knowledge and resources while I
was a high school student for me to offer proper assistance. Since I am passionate in the field of
social work, I decided to go an extra mile to acquire the required knowledge and skills that
would help me in effectively assisting those in need.
On the other hand, my experience is also one of the motivations for me to pursue social
work. For instance, I have personally experienced the impact of mental illness and the stigma
surrounding it on men; an aspect that has negatively impacted their health seeking behavior. In
order to prevent this problem from recurring in future, I believe that my knowledge in social
work will help in changing the stigma of men over mental illness, and will at the same time help
in convincing men to seek social services related to mental illness. Therefore, my decision to join
