Social Work Organization and Leadership and Management
Introduction
The organization to be considered is regarded as Brampton Multicultural Community
Center (BMCC). BMCC was established in 1987 as a non-profit organization with the aim of
assisting newcomers to integrate and settle in the community (Brampton Multicultural
Community Centre, 2017, n. p). This was due to rising instances of immigrants who required
support in securing jobs and settling in the community. The organization is characterized by its
establishment of process with volunteers in management program who were incorporated in a
variety of social programs such as Immigrant Settlement and Adaption Pro (ISAP). The
management of the BMCC is meant at connecting people and expanding the provision of
services. Therefore, this paper will seek to address the concept and application of leadership in
the BMC in ensuring that human services are provided effectively.
The concept of Leadership as it applies to Social Work
Social work leadership is one of the venerable assisting profession. Individuals involved
are strongly committed to helping people who have challenges navigating and coping with life
difficulty (Tafvelin, Hyvönen and Westerberg, 2014, p. 16). One of the unique aspects of social
work is the fact that leaders work in promoting social justice and change. Leaders are able to
address and understand the public issues and private problems surrounding them
According to Tafvelin, Hyvönen and Westerberg (2014), the social work leadership
commitment is embedded National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics
(2018) (p. 34). This is the only human services code of ethics professions that guild leaders in
social work to operate towards addressing social justice issues especially by dealing with the

most vulnerable people. The primary goal of social work leaders is to assist vulnerable
individuals to meet their basic human needs, as well as paying closer attention to empowering
them (Carnochan et al., 2014, p. 44). Therefore, the social workers focus on improving the well-
being of a person in both social context and community at large.
Social work leaders strive to engage towards self-actualization. This involves seeing
beyond individuals’ self-interest and working in favor of vulnerable people around them.
Following this, managers workers selflessly with the team’s vision and values as a whole,
involving the communities (Carnochan et al., 2014, p. 48). It is the growth platform that
stimulates the leader’s principles and moral development. In addition, social work leaders
perform their duties beyond expectations. In this case, organizations are able to have better-
planned outcomes as far as stimulating positive social change is concerned. This help in building
trust and sustainability among the social workers as effective leaders are able to motivate and
influencing them positively in performing their tasks (Carnochan et al., 2014, p. 53). As a result,
the organization is able to improve its general performance and contribution towards achieving
the shared goal.
Human service leaders are guided by ethical and practice of values-based behavior. De
Clercq et al., (2014) asserted that leaders need to demonstrate a strong personal commitment to
ensure the practice of ethical behavior in helping people in the social environment (p. 87). In this
case, social work leaders should lead by example in adhering to a formulated code of ethical
behavior in assisting individuals from the diverse background. Following this, leaders will be in
a position to take their lead in advance and operating an organization’s goals, mission, and
values. As a result of following the code of ethical behavior, human service leader is able to treat
SOCIAL WORK ORGANIZATION AND LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT 4
people equally and fairing despite their background (De Clercq et al., 2014, p. 94). This is based
on the fact that such individuals are uniquely positioned to assist in building community by
people solve life’s challenges, settlement and meeting their needs.
Additionally, leadership in the provision of human services have a well-defined structure
which impacts on every organization’s level. Duties are effectively allocated with teams being
aware of what is expected from them (Garrow and Hasenfeld, 2014, p. 37). Therefore, the
leaders are able to build team motivation upon which individuals involved become more
stimulated, inspired and caring mainly in helping people who are in need. Most importantly,
social work leaders are able to assist in setting the organization’s goals and vision at the team’s
level by outlining all the required operations. The social workers are able to deal with new
problems and performing better than expected.
Human services leaders oversee and organize the social work through upholding the
ethics and integrity of profession in the provision of free services. They ensure that they have
fulfilled specific moral responsibilities to community and individuals in needs (Sue, Rasheed and
Rasheed, 2015, p. 4). In this case, leaders have a moral responsibility to direct social workers to
respect the welfare and integrity of clients in every aspect. Social work leaders are therefore
governed by values and morals based on the “assisting profession” (Sue, Rasheed and Rasheed,
2015, p. 6). Each specific action and decision made by human service leader contributes to the
major goal of helping and positively changing clients and community at large.
Social work leaders are highly responsible for meeting individuals’ needs and serving the
community. They are proactive in initiating change and make difference within the community
by supporting people in becoming better in the community (Sue, Rasheed and Rasheed, 2015, p.

and improving the quality of both direct and indirect services.
Application of Leadership Concept in Brampton Multicultural Community Center
(BMCC)
The BMCC has a strong leadership structure that acts similarly to non-profit
organizations. The organization offers clients a variety of programs such as Immigrant
Settlement and Adaptation (ISAP) and Newcomer Settlement Program (NSP) amongst others
(Raj, 2018, n. p). All the formulated programs are grouped into various subgroups through which
they are administered by existing departments. The board is at the highest level of structural
hierarchy through which they overlook all organization operation. The events department is at
the smallest level in ensuring that all necessary is conducted regularly.
Human service leaders in BMCC empower and facilitate those in the community to meet
their basic needs in form of mentally, emotionally and physically. This is enabled by the
organization providing free services in order to assist the newcomers to settle effectively in the
new community (Raj, 2018, n. p). Based on this, BMCC leaders direct the offering of a variety of
programs such as healthcare and fun activities for children. Most importantly, the human service
leader in this particular organization is able to handle people from the diverse culture by
providing the needed resources to the newcomers in an effort to work on its motto ‘Connecting
People, Building Communities’. The organization offers learning opportunities and different
wide services to immigrant to link them to a better future in the ever-changing community (Raj,
2018, n. p). Most of the population served include families, children and homeless upon which
BMCC work on addressing their problems and meeting their needs.

The organization offers extensive human services such as social and medical programs,
as well as support to any individual in need. Most importantly, BMC assists in the settlement of
new immigrants into the community by enhancing the quality of life in the community through
the provision of excellent service (Raj, 2018, n. p). The BMC motto is based on “Connecting
people, build communities” upon which it clearly explained the mission statement. The
organization’s leadership position is aimed at stimulating the ability of newcomers to participate
effectively in the communities. In this case, human services leader offers free services in helping
people realize their abilities (Garrow and Hasenfeld, 2014, p. 56). BMC provides a variety of
learning opportunities and services to link newcomers in having a better future.
The human resource leaders in BMCC are well trained to effectively take a leading role
in supporting needy families. The teams are also aware of the latest information on support
systems in assisting families in to meet their needs (Garrow and Hasenfeld, 2014, p. 63).
Whether the newcomer or supportive sponsor’s family, human service team makes sure they are
equipped with relevant details and resources needed to meet all their needs. Additionally, BMCC
focuses on initiating a volunteering program in helping families faced with problems in their life
(Brampton Multicultural Community Centre, 2017, n. p). In this case, the programs are designed
to help in registering children in school, providing families with a doctor, furniture, and housing
amongst other activities that would assist in solving the existing challenges.
Additionally, BMCC managers are much committed, developed listening skills and
patient towards the vulnerable people they are helping. They also have the capacity to be
empathetic without lowering the empowerment of an individual’s ability. Some of the ways in
which BMCC professionals meet individuals’ needs including children and families is by
SOCIAL WORK ORGANIZATION AND LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT 7
actively listening to their perception of challenges and addressing each issue accordingly
(Brampton Multicultural Community Centre, 2017, n. p). Therefore, BMCC team can engage in
providing child care, health care services, housing and utility assistance.
The Brampton Multicultural Community Center (BMCC) leaders develop mechanisms to
support and sensitize newcomers on the need to further their education as a way of regaining
their independence. The social workers in the organization are therefore appropriate in
supporting individuals suffering in their academics as a result of family matters by offering the
needed resources (Sue, Rasheed and Rasheed, 2015, p. 7).
BMCC has initiated the Youth Leadership Project named, ‘Be the Change’. The main
aim of the project is to promote youth engagement and civic awareness. Through this, youths are
provided with training workshops to trigger and empower their leadership capabilities in
engaging in effective decision making in the community. Notably, the focus of the training
workshops is to boost one’s competency in leadership, negotiation tactics and public speaking
skills (Sue, Rasheed and Rasheed, 2015, p. 8). Successful youths in the educational programs are
able to engage in the Youth Mentorship Training Program through which they are required to
effectively mentor other youths in becoming better people in the society.
The leadership ability in the organization is manifested through proper follow up of the
formulated vision statement. As guided by the vision statement, BMCC leaders work on
strengthening the settlement center capacity and seeing individuals have an independent
community in the future (Raj, 2018, n. p). Organization’s manager clearly understands the need
for teamwork through which they seek at partnering with existing service providers in mutually
supporting each other. As a result, the newcomers’ talent and existing work skills are positioned
SOCIAL WORK ORGANIZATION AND LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT 8
well mainly in the Canadian workplaces. The organization operates by dividing offered services
and programs into various categories dedicating them to the participation of newcomer (Raj,
2018, n. p). For successful outcomes, clear policies are set through which the team follows with
the aim of ensuring that the BMCC function effectively.
The effectiveness of service delivery in BMCC is associated with a proper framework
through which clients follows. Following this, newcomers and existing clients visit the agency in
order, to begin with, the supportive programs. The leadership position of organization teams
requires clients to follow a specific order in getting involved in each program (Raj, 2018, n. p).
For instance, the Social Service Program (SSP) requires clients to first attend to detail program
sessions and register. Some of these programs incorporate sessions that built skills such as the
computer, interviewing and activities in the job search. By applying these approach and availing
different types of quality services, BMCC is able to develop newcomers’ abilities and skills, as
well as assisting them to settle commendably and becoming better people in the community (Raj,
2018, n. p).
Strategies to Increase Social Workers’ Leadership Participation within BMCC and its
Environment
The strategic effort to increase leadership participation within and outside an organization
requires proper training and education of individuals who are interesting in offering human
services. In this case, individuals focusing in social work leadership need the promotion of good
communication skills in order to effectively navigate the work environment which can be
complex (Jackson, 2016, p. 27). This is based on the fact that many of human service activities in
Brampton Multicultural Community Center deal with interpersonal interactions. The effective
SOCIAL WORK ORGANIZATION AND LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT 9
communication is made vital, thus the need for good skills demanded in social work. Human
service leaders need to be an active listener which enables clients to feel cared for and valued
(Jackson, 2016, p. 33). Most importantly, an active listener in the performance of human service
is able to combine clients’ body language and proper responses clarifying and responding to
questions within a given conversation in an effort to meet human needs.
The technique to perform an effective written communication needs to be taught to
potential social worker leaders in order to increase their numbers in offering human services.
Notably, social workers are projected to a huge burden of record keeping and reports to be
documented based on the people they are offering services and members of the care team
(Jackson, 2016, p. 41). In addition, increasing human service leaders need proper training in
verbal communication since situational awareness is key to meeting human needs. Therefore,
BMCC requires strong verbal communicator leaders who are able to actively listen and fit in
natural conversation within a particular setting. This will build leaders’ ability to handle
newcomers from the diverse region in helping and supporting them settling in the community.
The social workers’ leadership participation can be increased within BMCC environment
by ensuring that educational institution develops programs to prepare learners for leadership.
Through this, leadership skills should be built on learners and early stages (Gasman Abiola and
Travers, 2015, p. 23) Students need to be prepared to deal with realities of social work. At this
point, field education is crucial in assisting people to face the real-life based on the provision of
human services. The social work practices need to be incorporated as part of leadership training
in the classroom.
SOCIAL WORK ORGANIZATION AND LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT 10
The strategy should be developed in getting more students to engage in leadership
profession institutions. The institution should, therefore, motivate more learners to participate in
social work professional groups, for instance, the National Association of Social Workers
(NASW) before graduating. Most importantly, such involvement assists students to connect and
associate with already established leaders and start advocating for social work profession in the
public regions (Gasman Abiola and Travers, 2015, p. 43). Moreover, increasing number of social
workers’ leadership needs the linkage of more learners with human service profession mentors.
Learning institutions need to be proactive in identifying and determining students who have the
ability to lead especially in social work (Gasman Abiola and Travers, 2015, p. 52). Therefore,
such potential leaders should be linked with fieldwork instructors and faculty, as well as other
established professionals who can act as mentors. Potential social workers can effectively learn
how to lead by just watching what their mentors and instructors are doing or saying.
The interested individuals in the social work leadership position need to be provided with
tools required in the profession. Based on this, every existing and potential social worker need to
be provided with enough sources to demonstrate a positive outcome in the provision of human
services and raising the number of involved individuals (Bogotch, 2014, p. 45). Furthermore, all
leadership position in human service needs to be nurtured at all social work levels. For example,
individuals should be taught on topics such as human resource and social work techniques in
order to build interest in more people in dealing with people’s challenges and meeting their
needs.

Conclusion
Human service leaders work significantly in helping venerable people to fit and survive
in the community in regard to working in a particular organization. Brampton Multicultural
Community Center (BMCC), was established mainly to help newcomers to settle in the
community by providing support such as securing jobs and meeting their basic needs. The
supportive technique involves the initiation of social programs through which individual
volunteer to offer human services. The success of BMCC is stimulated by the practice of good
leadership within its operation that effectively guild the volunteer towards empowering the
newcomers by supporting them emotionally, physically and mentally. Human service leaders are
therefore committed and well-developed listening skills in ensuring that the newcomer fits well
in the community. Human service should develop strategies to increase the number of social
work leaders. In this case, the education institution needs to develop programs that prepare
students for a leadership position in conducting social work. Students need to be motivated,
supported and equipped with relevant leadership skills that should help them become the best
human service leaders.
