Disconnected Documentary Reflection on the World without Computers
The video, Disconnected by Gilbert and Velazquez (2002) presents interesting insights on
what could happen to people without computers. It invites insights on the need for people to
attempt reverting back to old way of life that was healthier than the world of computers. This
paper responds to questions regarding the subject.
Character to Identify With
The character in the documentary that I most identify myself most with is Andrew. His
distance from computers evokes questions from people in his social circle who want to be
updated about his social life. Like Andrew, friends will start looking for me and asking why I am
online. In essence, the decision of using or not using the computer is mediated by different social
factors that are beyond personal decisions.
Whether Chel Cheated
I do not think Chel cheated. She is realistic in the way that she confronts the challenges of
living in the computerless world.
Whether Andrew Cheated
Like Chel, Andrew did not also cheat. He is also realistic in the way that she confronts
the challenges of living in the computerless world.
Whether I Will be Willing to go Computerless
It is inherently to go computerless currently. The society has changed so much and
demands the use of computers in different spheres of life, including communicating, researching,
socializing and entertainment. I will not be willing to go computerless because I will have a
problem in these areas.
The Time to Commit to Computerless Life
DISCONNECTED 3
If I was to go computerless, it will not be for long. I suppose I would have tried if I did it
for one day. The call to use computers is clear and tempting because it is all for the sake of
convenience. I may fail to watch a movie on my laptop, but I will not hesitate to use it to
research and write an urgent paper.
The Modification to Make for School
The modifications I would have to make for schools include buying notebooks for taking
notes instead of using computers, acquiring a transistor radio and DVD player and TV screen for
entertainment and acquiring a typewriter for typing.
The Modification to Make for Socializing
The modifications to make up for socializing include visiting friends during free time to
talk and pass time. I will also consider attending outdoor activities such as sports. I hope that
these activities will keep me busy and enable me to put aside my computer.
How Going Computerless Would Affect Others
These modifications would inconvenience others who are not used to my routine of
socialization. My close friends will start worrying that I might be having a psychological
problem. If I continue being computerless, I could lose my social circle.
Things I Could Get Done
There are many things that I could get done without computers. For instance, I will be
able to access entertainment. I will be able to communicate to friends and watch movies. I will
be able to get news by reading a newspaper. I can also go to the library to research, but the
quality of the research may fall less of quality because not all materials are accessible through
the manual method.
What Would be Different is This Project was Done Today
DISCONNECTED 4
If I did this project today, I would have had a little difficult time writing. Accessing the
documentary, Disconnected would be difficult because the easiest way to access it is through the
internet. Instead, I would then have visited the movie shop to buy a hard copy to play through the
DVD player. I will then struggle to look for a typewriter and type. The use of the typewriter is
laborious because it does not allow for paper editing before printing. I would produce dirty paper
filled with typos.
