SOLITARY CONFINEMENT
Article 1
In their article, Bruce A. Arigo and Jennifer Leslie Bullock (2008) discuss cognitive
effects that lonely imprisonment has on inmates placed in super-max cells. The article goes
ahead to review what people know concerning the topic and recommends various things that
need to be put in place to salvage prisoners. Also, the article emphasizes that most correctional
facilities in the US allow for the social separation of convicts under harsh conditions that provide
extremely miniature sensory stimulation and minimum chances for socialization with other
people.
Ideas and concepts in the article are impressively organized without any form of
repetition. For instance, the authors use sub-topics to discuss various concepts and to make sure
that no idea is discussed more than once. The way the entire article is written shows that the
authors are highly experienced, skilled and well conversant with the topic at hand. As a way of
illustration, the article has an exceptionally written abstract that provides the reader with a
synopsis of the entire reading.
For good measure, the article uses short paragraphs that are straight to the point and they
accurately discuss sub-topics placed above them. Authors of the article are keen and careful to
stick to the discussion of the main topic and do not get distracted in whatsoever way. Also,
immediately after discussing all its concepts, the article provides an excellently drafted summary
and conclusion page. The summary and conclusion page clarifies anything that the reader may
not have captured in the article. Another impressive aspect of the article is the fact that it goes an
extra mile to provide notes for the reader to make sure that the reader has fully understood every
finer detail in the article.
SOLITARY CONFINEMENT
Nonetheless, the article faces one major weakness of being too general in its coverage.
For example, the article talks about all correctional facilities in the United States which carry out
both long and short-term solitary confinement to prisoners. The article would have been much
better if it had narrowed down to single out one correctional facility that does not respect the
rights of prisoners.
In conclusion, the article is an informational masterpiece that is keen on reminding its
readers about the psychological effects that lonely imprisonment has on inmates placed in super-
maximum units. I strongly recommend the article to every citizen across the United States to
create mass awareness about the harsh conditions that prisoners face in their correctional
facilities. I would also like the authors of the article to revise and make it a bit specific because
the content of the article is too general to identify it with a particular prison in the United States.
Article 2
The article discusses water resources and gratuitous suffering, and its authors narrow
down to expound on the non-fulfillment of a safety rational for death row. According to the
article, the confinement of prisoners of capital punishment across the United States is
characterized by activity deprivation and interpersonal isolation on segregated death rows. Mark
D.Cunningham, Reidy J.Thomas and Sorensen R. Jon(2016)categorically say that the super-
maximum security measures enacted on prisoners are based on the supposition that death penalty
prisoners are at an increased risk for ferocity. The article makes everything clear that the failure
of the presumption of high-risk violence strengthening death row has significant correctional
implications and public policies.
SOLITARY CONFINEMENT
The article has various strengths that are evident from the way it is professionally written.
For instance, authors of the article carry out a thorough and comprehensive research that is seen
from the way the article cites information from several scholars and sources. At the end of the
article, there is a reference list to provide proof that indeed the article is a research work and just
opinions of the authors. The use of various sources in the article makes it a credible and authentic
source that can be used for further research. As well, the article uses simple vocabulary that is
easy to read and understand. Besides, the article uses tables and figures to further clarify the
concept being discussed.
However, the article has one major weakness of covering so many concepts that may
confuse the reader. At some point, the reader may get bored and wonder how some of the
concepts covered in the article relate to the main issue of harsh environmental conditions that
capital punishment inmates are confined in. For that reason, the reader has to go through the
entire article word for word to understand the relationship between wasted resources and the
gratuitous suffering of inmates.
In conclusion, the article is a must-read piece of work for individuals interested in
understanding the life that capital punishment inmates lead in prison. Also, the article clarifies to
readers that the failure of assumptions of high violence risk is silently supporting death row and
has a significant correctional implication. Therefore, I recommend the article to any reader out
there because reading this timely written piece of work gives the reader an insight and a clear
picture of activity deprivation and interpersonal isolation that capital punishment prisoners
experience every day of their lives.
