Speech: Hamlet
To the presidents of the jury, other members of the tribunal, legal luminaries, learned
friends, ladies, and gentlemen; I great you all! I am James, the lead counsel for the defendant.
The matter before this honorable court my lords is not only critical to me but affects all citizens
of this great nation. It is, therefore, imperative to note this with concern at the beginning. A
comprehensive analysis should, therefore, be conducted with a view to giving justice to not only
my client but also the great residents of this nation (Raise your voice to emphasize that the issue
concerns the residents too). Hamlet’s choice of Fortinbras as his successor to the throne is a
mockery both to our justice system and the inhabitants at large. Hence, my client seeks justice on
behalf of the people of Denmark (Raise your voice to emphasize the need for action).
The weight of one’s mortality and state of mind as well as the complexity of life are
among the factors that might have interfered with the decision on who was the rightful successor
to the throne. It is apparent my lords that in the wake of his father’s death, Hamlet would not
stop pondering and considering the meaning of life and its eventual ending (Raise your voice to
create an impact on Hamlet’s situation at the time of making the decision). My questions arise
from the actions done by Hamlet my lords to suggest his state of mind. Was he doing things in a
rightful state of mind? Was he under the influence of something? Was he in the right state of
mind when doing them? My lords, it is clear and beyond any reasonable doubt that Hamlet was
indeed insane when he made the decision to make Fortinbras.

In his mind, Hamlet feels that dying is so bad. Its uncertainty frightens him even though
he is obsessed with the notion. My client had in many occasions saved his life during his
numerous suicidal attempts (Raise voice to emphasize the good actions of the defendant). The
manner in which he reacted at the graveyard especially upon seeing the Yorick’s skull
corroborates the fact that he was not sane. In this regard, it is obvious that the choice of
Fortinbras was made by a sane mind. While probing his father's death, Hamlet acts in a crazy
manner that consequently suggests that he is mad. He lost his grip on several occasions and
could not control his emotions, thereby succumbing to physical violence when under extreme
stress. My lords a person of Hamlet's caliber cannot act in that manner in a sane mind. It is,
therefore, his current status of mind that makes him act so. His impulse and choices beg the
question, what gives him the right to act in such a way without consequences? It in regard to his
status of mind as supported by his actions that I plea by the court to overturn his decision my
lords.
The state of the nation in Denmark is deteriorating (Raise your voice to emphasize the
need for action). The deaths have thrown our nation into a state of political turmoil “…something
is rotten in the state of Denmark…” Horatio has been a close, loyal, and confident of Hamlet for
several years now (Raise your voice to emphasize Horatio’s qualification and experience for the
throne). My client's closeness with departed prince makes him a perfect choice to be the new
king. He is learned and has experience on what it takes to be the king. During their friendship my
lords, Horatio help the prince on several occasion in executing his duties. It is, therefore, in good
faith that a loyal and confident of my client's level is rewarded not only because of their
friendship but the degree of experience and leadership ability. Denmark is at crossroads and,
therefore, needs someone with impeccable abilities and leadership qualities. Horatio is one such

person, hence my plea for justice being that he is the only living friend to Hamlet to tell Hamlet’s
story.
My lords, Denmark needs a king from its own citizens not a foreigner with anger for
revenge (Raise your voice to emphasize the need to make appropriate decision). Fortinbras is of
Norwegian origin. Having lost his father (also named Fortinbras) at the hands of Hamlet’s father,
he is out to avenge the killings of his father. This is clear for anyone interested to see. One does
not need to go to law school to understand this. It was, therefore, a ploy, dubious and underhand
plan by Hamlet and Fortinbras to attack Denmark with a view to honoring his late father. This
makes him another big foil for Prince Hamlet. Don’t we have qualified people from Denmark to
lead? Why should our nation be left in the hands of a foreigner whose intentions are clear from
the onset? Fortinbras' efforts to gain control of Denmark is ill-informed. He does not have an
iota of love or patriotic feelings for our nation but strong desire for revenge. On behalf of my
client, the great people of Denmark and myself, I plead with you to use your wisdom and give
justice to my people.
Lacking the ability to make sound decisions at the time of choosing his successor due to
his unstable mind will support Fortinbras' ploy and intentions to avenge and cause havoc to our
peaceful nation and should be avoided. This coupled with my client's loyalty to both Hamlet and
his nation, it is, therefore, my humble submission that you change the choice of Fortinbras as the
king and replace him with Horatio. This is a perfect recipe for change, prosperity, and justice to
the people of Denmark. Thank you my lords!
