States of Consciousness
According to Roberts Biswas-Diener and Jake Teeny, consciousness refers to awareness.
The state of awareness or consciousness may occur in various forms ranging from self-
awareness, awareness of the surrounding and awareness of bodily sensations. Biswas-Diener and
Teeny maintain that consciousness is grouped into two main levels or states that include high and
low awareness. In low awareness, a person frequently receives and evaluates sensory
information.
Despite the fact that every moment has several smells, sounds and smells for them all to
be consciously considered, the human brain is always processing all that information. In regard
to high awareness, it involves effortful attention as well as logical decision making. As way of
illustration, when people listen to an interesting story on a particular day, they are involving a
state of consciousness that allows them to be highly focused and aware of specific details in their
environment.
Jerry Freeman (2014) argues that there are seven levels or states of consciousness that
make up the path of spiritual development. Deep sleep, dreaming and the state of waking
consciousness are experienced by every adult person who has a functional nervous system. On
the other hand, some states of consciousness such as god consciousness, cosmic consciousness,
unity as well as transcendental consciousness are not readily available for they become
accessible only when a person indulges in frequent practice of medication.
According to Jerry Freeman (2014), transcendental consciousness possesses the quality
of silence, and in it, the senses and mind are fully silent, though consciousness is completely
awake. Cosmic consciousness enables an individual to develop the capability of sustaining the

inner silence while simultaneously doing other things such as thinking and other daily activities.
God consciousness is the sixth level of consciousness and it connects from the fifth level
consciousness, cosmic consciousness. God consciousness serves as a progression that occurs as
an individual transcends their thoughts and ultimately reaches the self. On the other hand, unity
consciousness refers to the complete awakening that has the asterisk that cannot end. This state
of consciousness keeps on taking place in the way of deepening and expansion.
Angela Clow and Patrick McNamara (2010) claim that dreaming is a significant state of
consciousness and involves several features that complement consciousness in the waking state.
There are changes that happen in the neuromodulatory environment and the neuronal
connectivity of the brain as people fall asleep and start to dream. Dreams come from internal
sources, though they may look completely in reality because something completely new comes
up through self-adjusting processes. The main difference between consciousness during sleep
and wakefulness is the intense disconnection from the environment. The disconnection is a vital
element of sleep because a sleeping individual shows no meaningful response to external stimuli,
not unless they are strong enough to cause an awakening like that caused by the sound of an
alarm.
In conclusion, consciousness relates to the awareness a person has towards themselves,
their environment and to their bodily sensations. There are two main levels of consciousness that
comprise of high and low awareness. On the same note, there are several states of consciousness
that range from sleep, dream and waking to the transcendental consciousness. For good measure,
there are other states of consciousness that include God consciousness as the sixth consciousness
level, cosmic consciousness (fifth level) and unity consciousness (seventh level).
