father resulting from a road accident. They are devastated and for the next few days, Stanley
does not attend school as the burial preparations get underway. Coincidentally, the coffee harvest
season is almost over, with the implication that the mother will be unemployed in a matter of a
couple of days. Indeed, after the burial of Stanley’s father, the mother loses her job and they are
forced to relocate to Nairobi where she gets employed by the same company where the father
worked. During the transition, the family is forced to move into one of the most insecure slums
in Nairobi. Nevertheless, Stanley maintains his resolve to become a doctor in the future and
enrolls in one of the schools in the slums.
Stanley arrives home on one fateful evening to find that his mother is uncharacteristically
late to get home that day. In an era where having a phone is a privilege reserved for a few middle
income and rich individuals in the society, the only way to trace her mother’s steps was to start
by inquiring in the firm where she worked. Anxious and afraid, Stanley leaves for the company
premises, but along the way, he discovers that his mother had been a robbery victim and had
been seriously injured and left to die. With the help of strangers, Stanley manages to her mother
to a hospital. Unfortunately, she is declared dead on arrival on account of having sustained
internal injuries. Stanley is forced to acknowledge that he has to pursue his dream of becoming a
doctor without the support of his family. Luckily, the school agrees to support his primary school
education but he is forced to balance between casual work and school to support his secondary
school education.
Against all odds, Stanley is on the path of realizing his dream of becoming a doctor
having secured a place in Kenya Medical Training College, albeit at an older age than would
normally be the case. It is a story of finding the courage to live despite all odds, adhering to the
principles of film creation of having a transition from one event to another and underlining the
