The curious incident of the dog in the Night-Time
Mark Haddon mystery novel The Curious Incident of the dog in the Night-Time gets
narrated by Christopher in the first person. He is a mathematician who exhibits some behavioral
difficulties. The paper conducts a cognitive overview on how Christopher's condition limits his
perspective of life. It completes the study by considering various attributes like his struggle to
become independent, the subjectivity of his arguments and also the disorder of his life.
The Disorder of Life
It is true that Christopher's conditions limit his perspective on life. He has an urgent need
of seeing a world that is orderly. He has been cocooned in an unusual environment, and he has a
significantly low tolerance for disorder. He entirely describes some of the challenges he faced at
the time he was on vacation with his parents. He suffered some difficulties because they had no
routine to follow. His parents are living a healthy life and most probably would want to live and
conduct a reasonably free experience at the time they are on vacation. Because Christopher has a
limited perception of life, he would want to take everything as quite official and that his parents
must follow some rules and routines (Haddon 132).
Christopher also finds it an uphill task to connect with the other members of his
community emotionally. He is a dangerous individual who primarily relies on logic to get to
interact with the other individuals. As a result, his narratives and ideas continuously deviate from
the ordinary course of life. He is the individual who would all over suddenly start discussing

topics like the rate of growth of the frog population in a pond. He then starts bothering the people
around him with the legitimate issues surrounding the scientific facts. These are some of the
attributes that make Christopher have a limited perception of life.
When Christopher leaves Swindon for his mother in London, he profoundly becomes
amazed and baffled by what he perceives as the disorder of the urban landscape. The modern-day
urban settings have tall buildings and a busy lifestyle. The fact that Christopher regards it as a
strange lifestyle makes it evident that he has a limited perception of life.
Subjectivity
Concerning the subject of subjectivity, his state allows him to perceive the world in a
limited and a very uncommon way. Such an attribute also allows the novel to share the
character's unique perception on life. The novel "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-
Time predominantly revolves around a murder mystery. We find that a significant portion of it
also revolves around Christopher's feelings on particular subjects (Haddon 74). On more specific
lines, the novel majorly deviates from the main story being investigated to more personalized
attention to Christopher's thoughts and feelings. It focused more on his reactions after learning
that the death of his mother was a hoax, and also his father lied about it. Christopher further
exhibits a limited perception of life by trying to finds reasons why a letter from the mother would
be dated after her death.
The Struggle to be Independent
The character that Christopher plays in the novel really can get assimilated to that of the
story of many youths who are growing become adults: most of them do not want to be dependent
in the future, and every youth is on the path of realizing their purpose in life. It is quite a limited
perception of life. However, Christopher cannot stop being dependent because he cannot

comprehend people, adapting to a new environment, and making a decision when presented with
numerous information to choose from. When he feels afraid, he does nothing but to shut up and
try hard not to be part of the world. Despite all this, Christopher has a deep motivation and drives
that he will be independents his desire for independence makes him disobey his father by not
taking his orders (Haddon 109). It gets also portrayed in his dream in which he desires to be
among the few people left on earth and living without anybody ruling them. He also wanted to
go and live by himself in college.
The desire to become independent makes Christopher move out of his comfort zone and
starts being sure of himself because he is seen doing things without the help of anyone.
Christopher s character as a person who is gaining confidence gets seen when he talks to very
many people whom he wasn't familiar with after wellington was murdered. It makes him fill that
he can give solutions to problems. Christopher also passed his A-level examination which gave
him the surety of joining college. There he can live alone without the guidance of his parents.
The trip to London acted as the door opener for Christopher's in tackling his issues like
interacting socially with people, adapting to the new environment and dealing with an overload
of information. By addressing all these, he gained the full confidence to enable him to deal with
his issues.
