The Discourse Community program that I was engaged is soccer club, which I joined
when I was in high school. The program was started in the early years after the school was
founded and after joining, I was an active member of the school’s soccer team. The goal and
objective were specific in that the program was meant to engage learners in soccer and help us
identify our talents in sports. I was involved in the group for four years as an active member in
helping in helping the school soccer team advance to the European School Campion’s League,
which we won three times. Information on our participation was retrieved from the school
library, sports records and the alumni students who told us about the school’s sports history.
The modes and genres used in the program were selected by the founders, who included
teachers, sports experts and administrators. What makes the D.C unique is that it is individual-
oriented in that instead of focusing on the general team, it is suited for the individual,
understanding their motivations, likes and emotional aspects that can make them gain perfection
in understanding their soccer talent. The D.C is a secondary discourse because I was socialized
through subsequent participation in various soccer groups before I qualified into the school’s
main team and went ahead to get the MVP award. We used specific languages of speaking
known as code switching which was unique and did not enable the opponent team to understand
our tactics. For instance, when getting a set piece, we only used sigh language accompanied with
a “deep” to show that the ball was going to come straight to the goal keeper’s area.
