The main objectives of engaging in yoga include the achievement of physical fitness,
bodily relaxation, peace of mind, and calmness. The practice involves two components that
complement one another to achieve these goals. These comprise the philosophy of yoga and the
practice of yoga. While the former defines the emotional and psychological part, the latter
focuses on the physical and forceful techniques. Involving in these activities affects the body and
soul of humans in numerous positive ways. These effects include physical fitness, health
rehabilitation, psychological awareness, stress management, and emotional stability.
The bodily and physical effects of participating in yoga ensure the improved physical
health of all participants. It results in improved flexibility, increased muscle strength, and
perfected posture (Chaoul, 2018). These benefits help in preventing diseases and conditions
associated with sedentary lives like hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, and arthritis, among
others. Further, yoga betters the musculoskeletal system in numerous ways. Besides bettering the
bone system, it prevents the breakdown of cartilage and joints, which is achieved by engaging in
weight bearing exercises, diversity of exercise posture, and expanding joints through to their full
range motion allowances. As explained by Telles and Singh (2018), the back, forward, and
sideway twists on the spine also help protect the latter from fatigue and stress. The author
indicates that yoga can also be used therapeutically for back pain rehabilitation and other
treatments.
Psychological and emotional effects of yoga are also positive and healing to humans. The
first recognizable of these is emotional awareness, which is attained through intricate meditation
and relaxation. According to (Chaoul, 2018), the practice creates a state of awareness
intelligence through four pathways. The first is having the knowledge of one’s feelings as well as

the causes of such feelings. The second is the ability to use such awareness in manipulating
personal emotions and impulses. Third is the development of empathy and regard towards others.
The last pathway aids the development of healthy personal relationships with others through
emotional competence. These tenets make yoga practitioners able to cope with anxiety, manage
stress, and achieve personal emotional healing.
Other health benefits of yoga encompass increased blood flow, the draining of lymphs,
and regulation of adrenal glands (Telles& Singh, 2018). Improved blood circulation results in the
increased distribution of oxygen to body organs and cells. The constant drainage of lymphs
assists the lymphatic system in disposing toxic substances and destroying cancerous cells. The
regulation of adrenal glands maintains human temperament and assists in managing emotional
situations. Kraftsow (2017) also cited other general positive effects of yoga as improved
breathing, better sleeping, enriched inner strength and peace of mind. All these effects are
physically and mentally healthy to humans.
In conclusion, yoga aims at realizing physical fitness, bodily relaxation, peace of mind,
and calmness. Those who partake in the practice develop a deep understanding of their physical
and mental states. They also recognize and appreciate their environments. They use this
understanding in managing their relationship with others within their environments. Resultantly,
they achieve healthy lifestyles in all spheres. Overall, direct effects of engaging in yoga include
enhanced flexibility, amplified muscle strength, improved body posture, strengthened bones,
boosted immunity, and broadened understanding. Better sleep, digestion, and breathing are also
realized through the practice. These are the reasons most of those who understand yoga
encourage others to participate.
