The Gibbs Reflection Theory

Tasks: The Gibbs Reflection Theory
Task 1
I am trained as a teacher and I plan to assess the impact of effective communication on
the outcomes of performance both in curriculum and out-of class activities such as sports. My
study shall involve a group of ESL students participating in class project on minute taking as
well as reviewing past literature on government enrolment policies. Applying the Gibbs theory of
reflection, I expect to record the modes of communication and how these different methods have
impacted on the outcome of their tasks after a period of 20 hours. Primarily, learning involves
passing information from one person to a receiving party through a repetitive form to achieve
results. In this paper, I apply the concept of Gibb’s reflection as an aid while giving an account
of two incidents while attending my teacher-practice.
Task 2
In my first task, I assigned my ESL class individual assignments to write an essay about
their understanding of the political situation in the country. As planned, I sent the assignment
over individual emails with a note at the end indicating that it was optional to seek help or do the
assignment in groups of two. Notably, those who read the email and did the assignment in groups
performed better than those who did the assignment individually. On the second assessment, I
assigned ESL class to review past literature on the government position on admitting foreign
students to local universities. Since the assignment was on individual basis, the performance
compared to past group assignments were underwhelming. From my observation, learners never
had the chance to discuss their findings as is the case with group discussions.
My evaluation of the incidents shows the impact of effective communication on learners’
performance in different tasks. In applying the Gibb’s reflection cycle in my evaluation as noted
by Gibbs, Widaman & Colby, (1982), the repetitive learning cycle provides an iterative model
that allows for applying the model to challenge their assumptions. The cycle explores diversity in
ideas to for self-improvement. ESL learners who did their assignment in groups proved
successful in their tasks based on effective communication among members compared to those
who did their tasks independently. From my assessment, effective communication forms a
critical aspect of success in educational activities.
