The Global Me Too Movement
The news has been dominated by stories regarding misconduct and sexual harassment
allegations, especially in media and entertainment industries, and the government institutions.
Such stories have led to the emerging of the #Me Too Movement that has originated on
Twitter among other social media platforms during late 2017. Since then, the movement has
turned out to be a public message encouraging people to share stories and stand against
sexual abuse and harassment (Heller, 2018). However, while the movement’s purposes are
praiseworthy, it is a sensitive subject for the employers, who increasingly find themselves
being accused of sexual harassment.
The movement has several pros, and one of them is that it helps to expose the real problem's
scale. Moreover, it has assisted in setting standards for decency. In that regard, victims,
especially women, can now speak out about what constitutes sexual harassment. The third
advantage is that it provides the victims with a channel to speak out, and express their feeling
(Heller, 2018).
On the other hand, there are some oppositional reasons expressed by people who are
against the movement. For instance, it has been pointed out that the movement could be
exploited by both individuals who lie and cheat. In that sense, fake sympathizers and fake
victims with their malicious intentions could quite well hijack it and make it become
discredited by a large number of people, which the truth is revealed (Heller, 2018).
Recently, President Trump condemned the #Me Too Movement, questioning the
credibility of any person who comes out with his or her own story of assault and harassment
(Medkiff, 2018). Notably, he might be right because some people might be fake victims who
have their intentions other than telling the truth of what happened.
