The Manifest Destiny
The Manifest Destiny was a belief among the Americans in the 19th century that the destiny
of settlers was primarily to expand across the continent. The purpose of the expansion was to
spread the American traditions, culture, institutions, and enlighten the most primitive nations in
the world. Most of the Americans believed that God blessed the country and that the latter intended
to spread its rule. As a result, the desire for the expansion led to the acquisition of territories and
consequently impacted on the Civil War.
The Manifest Destiny aimed at implementing inventions for expansion of the country's
territory as colonies. First, it marked the rise of imperialism. The nation accessed the freedom and
resources to build its empire. Secondly, there was a growing cotton kingdom in both North and
South America. Thirdly, the Louisiana Purchase that took place in 1803 increased the size of the
nation after the acquisition of Spanish Florida. However, there were disagreements on the validity
of Destiny Manifest that acted as significant obstacles. First, the impatient colonizers of North
America in the 1600s considered taming this idea, causing unending wanderlust across regions.
Secondly, the spread of American settlers resulted in further unrest across the borders, worsening
relations with the neighbors and creating annexations (Shire and Laurel, 2016). Thirdly, there were
growing disputes over slavery that threatened the political system and led to sectional discords.
Despite these challenges, the desire to uphold the Manifest Destiny among the American people
was driven by the need to promote industrial surge. The country aimed at becoming a premier

economic state as well as embracing geopolitical doctrines. Moreover, the Americans had the quest
for revolutionizing seagoing architecture. They intended to replace sail with steam, a move that
would allow them to exercise controlled navigation of the seas.
