The Plight of Mexican Immigrants
Currently, the US has a population of about four million immigrants. The actual figure is
not possible to determine as the immigrants are intermixed where we have foreign-born
population determined from census records the subtracting it from the number of illegal
immigrants who smuggle from the borders. There is a belief that there is almost two-thirds of
Mexican immigrants have lived in the US for over ten years (Molina, 2008). Most of the
Mexican immigrants are concentrated in the cities of California, New Jersey, Illinois and Texas.
The immigrants live in the dilapidated state where they live in a nuclear family with an average
of one child. The undocumented immigration of Mexicans to the United States has steadily
dropped since 2007 under the Obama era where strict policies were set on illegal immigrants
(Chavez, 2012).
The highest number of Mexican Immigrants in the US had peaked up to 12 million by the
year 2006.The decrease has been affected by border patrols and border control as a recession in
the US soil. The decline can be associated with stabilization of Mexican economy where
unemployment has seen a decline. As mentioned earlier about 5 million immigrants report in the
US soil. The other percentages which make up of about 60% are immigrants from other South
American countries. About 42% of the Mexican immigrants have overstayed their visas while
the rest have smuggled through the border (Molina, 2008). Current reports from the federal
government have indicated that the government on enforcing immigration rules through the FBI,
DEA and the United States marshal service. Most of the Mexican immigrants are a cartel that
does money laundry by drug selling. The federal government spent many resources and money
in the recruitment of border patrol officers (Chavez, 2012).

Additional studies have incorporated data from Mexico to make a comparison of the
population to examine the impact on US immigration to incorporate migration policy. According
to Robert Fairlie, concerning the 2000 PUMS on Mexico census to examine self-employment
differences in Mexico and Mexican immigrants in the United States. Pablo and Lubotsky use the
census data to compare the realization of education pertaining Mexican migrants and non-
migrants in which case was found to be more educated than the migrants. Researches by Susan
Richter et al. (2003) on National Mexico Rural Household Survey were launched to test the
effects of Mexican Immigrants in North America.
The Free Trade Agreement argued on the increase of border enforcement on the influx of
cheap labor from the Mexican immigrants. The immigrants provide cheap labor in the United
States industries. Most of the United States population is literate, and thus they face challenges in
the field of technical work such as masonry or plumbing. in that case, it is clear that these
smugglers from Mexico are at this moment entitled to the right of proper treatment. These
studies were able to find that policies and economics effects are profound and affect migration
influx. The effects were found to be little compared to the migration networks. The political
climate of the United States has currently shifted to Mexican immigration and thus weakening
viable policy solutions. Campaigns have led to a campaign on immigrant students in the US
(Chavez L, 2012).
Problem Statement
The research will focus on Mexican immigrants, and how they are treated aggressively
when they enter the US. The study will reveal how law enforcement tends to be aggressive since
THE PLIGHT OF MEXICAN IMMIGRANTS 4
immigrants are often regarded as threat by the justice system, which leads to aggressive policies
and behaviors among law enforcement. These policies are usually accepted by the general
population, allowing them to thrive. There is the need of reviewing the immigrant’s policies as
per the United Nations Agreement. The UNHCR guarantees rights of asylum to all civilians in
any country. The current study will critique Mexican immigrants in US as well as the policies set
against them.
Research question
The current study answers the question “what are the policies of immigrants in the US
concerning Mexicans?”
Research objectives
The current study was guided by the following objectives:
1. To investigate the journey of Mexican immigrants to the US.
2. To examine the effectiveness of the policies rose on immigrants in the US.
3. To investigate the problems which face the Mexican immigrants on their journey
to United States.
Theoretical Framework
This research paper will use a framed framework to base the concepts discussed. The
research will seek information on US immigrants from the census data. It is obvious that not all
the Mexicans in the US are illegally based. Some Mexicans in the US are in pursuit of
knowledge, jobs and other necessary activities. On the other hand there are those who have
overstayed their visa while others have smuggled via the border. The research will get the actual
THE PLIGHT OF MEXICAN IMMIGRANTS 5
data from the census board and subtract the legal Mexicans. The difference, D shall be
population of the illegal immigrants. This will be essential in knowing if the equation for the
illegal outweighs the legalized one. The research will seek the policies concerning immigrants
from the immigration office. Information on policies will be the key to this study as it will
determine the type of treatment of the Mexican immigrants. This framework will open up
surveys to Mexican immigrants in the US where it will use survey questions and direct interview.
Literature Review
Avsar (2016) shows for about four decades, there has been a rapid growth of Mexican
immigrants to the US having a population of 11.7million. Some researchers predict that there are
about 42 million Mexicans who were born in the United States. The fact that there are Mexicans
who have resided in the US for a long time attracts others it is however important to note that the
population of immigrants has dropped especially the Trump era due to the strict policies set both
internally and at the borders. The borders are manned 24/7 by patrol police who are given orders
of shoot to kill if they have been attacked.
According to Ceballos and Palloni, (2010) Mexican immigrants to the US are in pursuit
of various things which are aimed at bettering their lives. First and foremost thing is the search of
THE PLIGHT OF MEXICAN IMMIGRANTS 6
job opportunity. Job opportunity is a challenge to the developing countries where Mexico has
unemployment of around 40%. The fact that the US borders were not highly guarded also made
many Mexicans flip to the other side. Studies by the United Nations Population reveal that a vast
population of Mexican immigrants is based in the United States among other countries such as
Germany, India, and China. This paper will critique the plight of Mexican immigrants to the US
as well as the problems they undergo on their way to the land of “wonders” (Gurwitz, 2014).
According to Molina, (2008) the US population has also had an appetite for the Mexican
drugs, and thus many have smuggled over the borders illegally. Reports indicate that cartels have
attracted wealthy through smuggling and thus many Mexican illegally migrate to the US. These
Mexicans choose to use the river and a vast desert to avoid being tracked down by border police.
Sometimes it can be dreadful to cross these rivers as the clothes can be wet and heavy which
makes one unable to swim (Feliciano, 2008). To those who are using the Mexican desert to get to
the other side of the border, they do it when the temperatures are not too high during the night.
Sometimes one cannot travel over long distances when the temperatures are too high. There are
these brokers known as “coyote” who are paid by getting one across the rivers or the vast deserts.
South Texas and Rio Grande Valley have since opened gates to illegal immigrants who smuggle
over the US border (Molina, 2008).
Chavez (2012) shows how Mexican immigrants get to US through the cities which have
less security and politics like the California, Miami and so on. Many of the Mexicans do not
have fluent English and pass a lot of challenges from the US citizens who mock and treat them
obnoxiously. When they land at the borders, the harsh treatment starts as many people think they
are drug traffickers. These immigrants face a lot of challenges in the US as some will stay on the
border for quite a couple of days while they spent a night on the frozen floor. The border patrol
THE PLIGHT OF MEXICAN IMMIGRANTS 7
police are also very harsh as they force them to sign a deportation document. It is devastating to
deport someone who has traveled miles on the journey to their success (Cho, 2011).
Policies Set For Treatment of Immigrants
Dick (2011) suggests that the US government has set policies on the treatment of
immigrants. This comes after intense pressure from the United Nations. It was critical to be
raised in the US since its one of the countries with the highest number of immigrants. These
policies were reached after it was noticed that these immigrants come from countries which have
barricaded economies and thus pursue jobs and enjoyable lifestyle. Job opportunity is a challenge
to the developing countries where Mexico has unemployment of around 20%. The fact that the
US borders were not highly guarded also made many Mexicans flip to the other side. Studies by
the United Nations Population reveal that a vast population of Mexican immigrants is based in
the United States among other countries such as Germany, India, and China (Molina, 2017).
The Treatment Of Immigrant’s Policy
According to Ortega, (2016) US government has hardened the line by not accepting any
path to the creation of citizenship and has given a stern warning in the Republican controlled
house of representative. There should be fair treatment of the immigrants as nobody leaves their
home for good reason. The policy should be hailed in such a way that it gives immigrants room
for preparation when they arrive in a new country (Ortega, 2016). There is the need of setting up
bays where all .the immigrants can be settled. The US government should, however, tighten the
rules over drug smuggling as it is the primary source of crime. The DEAs should work closely
with the border patrol police to ensure that no drugs are smuggled via the border or anywhere. As
THE PLIGHT OF MEXICAN IMMIGRANTS 8
some of these immigrants arrive at the edge very weak, the government should set up a clinic and
first aid kits at the birders (Rollin, 2014).
Gonzalez, (2008) argues that this is affirmative as some of the immigrants are not illegal
and are in the US to transact legit business. In this case, this research also highly recommends
public education on treatment of immigrants. As mentioned earlier there is US civilian who treat
the immigrant's ill may be due to their color or language. Migration always results in
development gain other than brain drain. The US economy has realized a lot of strength from
these immigrants, and thus the government should create more business avenues. The wealthiest
countries have been there because they allowed immigrants to work (Gonzalez, 2008).
The wealthiest countries in the world have some of the most favorable policies on
immigrants. These policies cover immigrates on overall health, education and other sponsorship
programs. There is the need of having anti-discrimination policies as discrimination is the evil of
ill-treatment among the immigrants. The Civilians need to be taught the importance of
immigrants as well as their output to a countries economy. Immigrants are responsible for the
positive growth of any countries economy. The reason falls from the fact that they strengthen the
economy by currency exchange (Gentsch & Massey, 2011).
Conclusively the US government should consider revising its policies concerning the
Mexican immigrants. This will also earn excellent cooperation between the two neighboring
countries and help fight back the problem of drug trafficking. Some of these immigrants are
innocent and clean only looking for a job. It is better to teach a man how to fish than give them
fish, in this case, the US should help Mexico build her nation rather than the ill-treatment(Center
THE PLIGHT OF MEXICAN IMMIGRANTS 9
For Global Development, 2018). There is the need for civil education on discrimination.
Development is only achieved by love, harmony and unity are attained.
